Teachers take care of students "3 on the spot"
Prolonged heavy rain after the storm caused the Day River to overflow the dike, causing many households in Phu Hien village, Hop Thanh commune, My Duc district to be deeply flooded, making it difficult for students to go to school every day.
Receiving feedback from parents, the Board of Directors of Hop Thanh B Primary School has developed a plan and reported to the People's Committee of Hop Thanh Commune and the Department of Education and Training of My Duc District about organizing lunch at school for more than 100 students of Phu Hien village.
When the plan was approved, the school immediately assigned staff to buy necessities, spoons, bowls, chopsticks... to organize lunch for more than 100 boarding students at noon on September 12.
At noon on September 13, 130 students from Phu Hien village had lunch at school. The school continued to assign teachers and staff to take care of teaching, cooking, taking care of boarding students, and managing students.
To ensure the safety of the children, the school also encourages parents to let their children board and sleep overnight at school, implementing the "3 on-site" motto (cook - eat - sleep on-site) so that teachers can take care of them, avoiding the situation of going home without anyone to look after them, which can be potentially dangerous.
On the evening of September 12, more than 10 students registered to sleep over at school, and by September 13, the number of students registered to sleep over at school had increased to 32. Many students also registered to stay at school on Saturday and Sunday nights, so the school bought additional blankets, mosquito nets, and pillows so that the students could have a good night's sleep.
"The school assigned 5 teachers to stay overnight at the school; one teacher will manage the male students' room, the other will manage the female students' room; the principal will also stay overnight at the school to manage the students. After the students have finished bathing, the teachers will wash and dry their clothes so that the students have enough clothes and uniforms to wear every day," said teacher Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, Principal of Hop Thanh B Primary School.
Teachers arrange study places for more than 300 students.
On September 13, the road leading to the satellite school of Van Thai Primary School in Thai Binh village, Van Thai commune, Ung Hoa district was flooded up to the neck. Inside, the school yard was still submerged in murky water.
Three days ago, when teachers had just finished cleaning up to prepare for the return of students, heavy rain continued to cause the Day River to rise. Forecasting that the school was at risk of flooding, on September 11, after the morning class, the school mobilized 100% of staff to move all desks, chairs, books, and teaching aids from the first floor to the upper floors, preserving the facilities.
After 4-5 hours, the cleanup was temporarily completed. At this time, the learning method for students at the remote school during the flooded days began to be calculated and built.
“Organizing online teaching for more than 300 students in 12 classes at the Thai Binh satellite school is not feasible because most of the parents are farmers and work far away, the students do not have enough equipment and the internet connection is not guaranteed. After reaching an agreement, the school developed a plan to move all of the more than 300 students from the satellite school to the main school more than 2km away to study directly,” said the school’s principal, Kieu Thi Ha.
With the motto of ensuring safety for students but also following the 2024-2025 school year schedule, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has directed schools to flexibly implement many forms of teaching, suitable to the actual situation of the locality (online teaching, in-person teaching, online combined with in-person teaching or assigning homework and tasks to students).
In addition, schools are also actively coordinating with authorities to develop plans for environmental sanitation, disinfection, table and chair arrangement, and inspection of all facilities... to be able to welcome students back to school as soon as the water recedes.
More than 150 schools cannot teach in person
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, as of the morning of September 13, there were still more than 150 schools in the city that could not organize in-person teaching. Of these, there were 44 kindergartens, 53 primary schools, 40 secondary schools, 16 high schools, 1 vocational education and continuing education center, and 1 school under the Department.
Currently, there are 9 schools used as flood shelters for local people, including: Thuong Cat Secondary School, Co Nhue 2B Primary School (Bac Tu Liem District); Xuan Mai B Secondary School, Thuy Xuan Tien Secondary School (Chuong My District); Trung Gia Kindergarten, Trung Gia B Primary School (Soc Son District); Thu Phu Kindergarten, Thong Nhat Primary School (Thuong Tin District); Ngo Quyen Secondary School (Son Tay Town).
