After Typhoon Yagi, aquaculture in Van Don district has faced many obstacles. The locality is trying to find solutions to remove difficulties for businesses, cooperatives, and aquaculture households at sea to quickly recover and develop.
With about 1,200 households raising fish and oysters... having their cages, rafts, and livestock killed and swept away by the waves and wind, Van Don is the locality that suffered the most damage in the province due to Typhoon Yagi.
To overcome difficulties, quickly help people stabilize their lives, and restore the damaged aquaculture area, the district quickly mobilized support from many sources. Although up to now, the aquaculture area has not reached the planned level, it has partly helped people feel secure in returning to their jobs, overcoming difficulties to help Van Don's aquaculture regain its "form".
Ms. Truong Thi Thuy Huyen, Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “We continue to strengthen the management of aquaculture. At the same time, we will propagate and mobilize people to complete the conversion of floating materials in aquaculture; deploy the work of numbering rafts and providing guidance on the crop season. We request that communes and towns manage in accordance with the zoning and planning of aquaculture species according to the approved Aquaculture Project of Van Don district to 2030, with a vision to 2045.”
The district directs the allocation of sea areas to organizations and individuals in the area; requests specialized departments and offices to guide the establishment of cooperatives and complete procedures for the allocation of sea areas. The district overcomes shortcomings and limitations according to the recommendations of the EC and advises on the development of plans to implement tasks according to the direction of the province. Relevant departments and agencies continue to synthesize and monitor fishing vessels in the area; review the registration and inspection of fishing vessels, advise the district People's Committee to establish an interdisciplinary working group and launch an inspection to handle violations, and overcome shortcomings in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
To reassure people about aquaculture and quickly overcome the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, the district has allocated sea areas to 5 aquaculture households (area under 1ha within 3 nautical miles under the authority of the district) with an area of 2.6ha. The district has confirmed the sea areas to restore production for 85 cooperatives with 1,208 members; restored 5,444ha of oyster rafts, planted 2,669ha; restored 6,400 fish cages.
Phat Co Aquaculture Cooperative (Ha Long Commune) combines aquaculture with services and food tourism. Over the years, the Cooperative has invested tens of billions of VND in building rafts to raise grouper, oysters, and clams, and providing food services on the rafts, creating jobs for 2-4 workers depending on the season. Each year, the Cooperative earns hundreds of millions of VND in profit.
Mr. Nguyen Si Binh, Director of the Cooperative, said: Storm Yagi caused significant damage to the Cooperative's facilities, but with the encouragement and support of authorities at all levels, the facility quickly recovered to continue business and production, contributing to the development of the district's seafood industry.
With the support of authorities at all levels and social organizations, and the sharing of practical support policies, the difficulties caused by natural disasters will pass, and Van Don seafood production will return to a methodical, sustainable, and high-value state, contributing to the development of the seafood economy of the whole province.
