ENGLISH: THE TOP CHOICE OF URBAN STUDENTS

Hanoi has about 100,000 students who will take the high school graduation exam in 2025, accounting for about 10% of the total number of high school graduation exam candidates nationwide. Therefore, the students' subject selection trends are of particular concern in the preparation for this exam.

Minh Ngoc, a student of class 11D2, Yen Hoa High School (Hanoi), shared that she plans to choose English and History in addition to the two compulsory subjects. Ngoc said that because when studying, she was able to choose subjects based on her ability, and when taking the exam again, she was able to choose again, so the high school graduation exam will be very easy. What she and her friends are interested in is how universities, especially top universities, will change their admission methods.

Mr. Dam Tien Nam, Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary and High School (Cau Giay District, Hanoi), said that the school has conducted a preliminary survey on students' needs for choosing exam subjects. Accordingly, the choice of exam subjects is also different for each class. For classes of students studying natural sciences (KHTN), the two subjects they choose the most are English and physics, or physics and chemistry. For classes focusing on social sciences (KHXH), the most chosen subject is English, followed by history and geography. New exam subjects such as information technology, economic education and law are also chosen by students, but not many.

According to initial assessment, English will be the subject that many candidates choose to take the exam, even though it is not a compulsory subject.

In addition to English, history is also chosen by many students in the social sciences because it is a competency-based subject, combining more experience, and students are more excited about this subject. "This shows that students will really enjoy learning history if we have the right teaching and testing methods," said Mr. Nam.

A representative of Phan Huy Chu High School (Dong Da District, Hanoi) also said that although there is no compulsory exam, students tend to choose English the most because this is their strength and a subject that teachers and students at the school have valued for many years.

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School (Hanoi), said that according to the plan, next week the school will conduct a survey on the subject preferences of students who will take the high school graduation exam in 2025. "However, it is certain that foreign languages will be the subject that students choose the most among the elective subjects, regardless of whether students study in the direction of developing their natural science or social science competencies," Ms. Quynh said.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, President of Marie Curie School (Hanoi), said that around the first semester of the next school year, the school will survey students' preferences for exam subjects. English, whether compulsory or not, will certainly be the most chosen subject by students.

DO PROVINCIAL STUDENTS TEND TO CHOOSE SOCIAL SUBJECTS?

However, in the provinces, many opinions say that the choice of 2 subjects will be more diverse, not focusing too much on any specific subject like in Hanoi and big cities. In particular, the trend of choosing subjects in the field of Social Sciences will be more because from grade 10, students choose these subjects much more than Natural Sciences.

The trend of students choosing subjects for the high school graduation exam is of special concern in the preparation for this exam.

Mr. Do Tuong Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province, stated that in reality, when implementing selective teaching according to the new program, there was a school with 400 10th grade students, but only 65 students chose Natural Science subjects.

Deputy Director of the Nam Dinh Department of Education and Training Vu Duc Tho also said that it may be due to social trends in recent years, especially in the year of implementing the General Education Program (GEP) 2018, the number of high school students enrolling in social science subjects is concentrated.

Mr. Dang Ngoc Tu, Principal of Hoang Van Thu High School (Lang Son), said that in mountainous provinces, students choose subjects such as geography, information technology, technology, economic education and law... more than subjects in the natural science group.

At Pham Hong Thai High School (Nghe An), Ms. Ho Thi Ha, the school's principal, said that foreign languages are only advantageous for some students in top classes or for some students who wish to take the university entrance exam for group D. Therefore, the fact that foreign languages are no longer a compulsory subject will affect students' choices and many students will choose other subjects instead.

Ho Chi Minh City: In most top schools, students choose natural science subjects.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, Principal of Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), informed on January 8 that when students return to school to prepare for the second semester, the school will survey and explore the choices of grade 11 students to prepare a study plan for the period from now until the graduation exam in 2025.

Mr. Trinh Duy Trong, Principal of Truong Chinh High School (District 12), said that the trend of students taking the high school graduation exam in 2025 will be to choose 2 elective subjects which are familiar subjects such as foreign languages, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history rather than new subjects such as economic and legal education, information technology, technology.

Similarly, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), said that the trend is that students will choose 2 out of 4 elective subjects according to the career orientation of the 2028 General Education Program. In particular, according to a general assessment in Ho Chi Minh City, the choice of elective subjects depends on the location of high schools. Specifically, according to Mr. Phu, in most of the top schools, students tend to choose subjects in the field of Natural Sciences.

Agreeing with this opinion, Mr. Ngo Van Hoi, Vice Principal of Can Thanh High School (Can Gio District) also said that through surveys in preparation for the graduation exam in 2025, the school's students tend to choose subjects such as history, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology.

PLAN YOUR EXAM REVIEW ACCORDING TO YOUR SUBJECT PREFERENCES

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Principal of Ha Hoa High School (Phu Tho), said that the school has developed a specific plan and roadmap; directed the professional team/group to review and adjust the graduation exam review plan in accordance with the changes of the Ministry of Education and Training. The school surveyed the wishes and classified students to have a plan to organize classes and graduation exam review classes suitable to the students' choices.

Mr. Tran Xuan Tra, Principal of Xuan Truong B High School (Nam Dinh), informed that the school will organize for students to register for elective exams. On that basis, it will stream and classify students according to pairs of elective subjects to build a suitable and effective learning and review class model... To motivate students to actively study and review, Mr. Tra suggested that the results of all 4 exams be included in the university admission criteria (even though each school has its own admission plan or additional criteria). In particular, this exam plan must remain stable for at least 5-10 years to avoid confusion among students, parents and disruption in high schools...

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Ba Khuong, Principal of Ham Long High School (Bac Ninh), said that the school will develop a detailed teaching plan for each class and group of students in the class; instruct students to choose 2 subjects to take the exam early to have a review plan. It is expected that from the beginning of the next school year, the school will arrange for math and literature, each subject to review in the afternoon; 2 optional subjects, each subject will be taught in half a day.

Will the innovation of high school graduation exams reduce extra tutoring?

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that in the innovation of testing and examinations, there will be clear changes in the high school graduation exam from 2025 in the direction of correct assessment and encouragement for teachers and students to teach and learn in the direction of developing capacity and qualities, not just acquiring pure knowledge. With this new requirement, the traditional way of preparing for exams will gradually no longer be suitable. In the circulars regulating the testing and assessment of the process of high school students, there have been many adjustments, recognizing diverse and humane forms of assessment, encouraging students to progress, encouraging the forms of "teachers organizing, students performing tasks" rather than paper-based tests with increased difficulty of exercises...

According to Mr. Thanh, when this is done well and there is a profound change in schools, not focusing too much on final exams, students will feel secure with their studies at school, learning through group activities, through learning projects, through self-study rather than following review classes. This is a process that will not help to immediately end the rampant practice of extra teaching and learning, but will have a great impact on the motivation of students and parents to study extra.
