The second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 ends this morning with the final four matches. Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Arsenal, Aston Villa (England) and Real Madrid finalize the list of quarter-finalists with Paris Saint-Germain (France), Inter Milan (Italy), Bayern Munich (Germany) and Barcelona (Spain) in the morning of March 12.
Of the eight teams mentioned above, only PSG lost the first leg but still qualified for the next round. They lost 0-1 at home to Liverpool, then won 1-0 away and defeated their opponents in the penalty shootout.
Arsenal meet Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
It also took penalties to reach the quarter-finals, but Real Madrid had the opposite scenario. The defending champions won 2-1 at home against Atletico Madrid, then lost 0-1 in the rematch. However, Kylian Mbappe and his teammates still managed to reach the quarter-finals.
English football has only two representatives, Aston Villa and Arsenal. Both teams created a big advantage in the first leg (Arsenal won 7-0, Aston Villa won 3-1) away against PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Club Brugge (Belgium). They did not let any surprises happen in the rematch.
Other leagues also have two representatives in the Champions League quarter-finals: Germany (Bayern Munich, Dortmund) and Spain (Real Madrid, Barcelona). However, none of the last-eight matches are between two compatriots.
