Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism: If you play, you have to play well!
When striker Le Van Thuc ran down to face the goal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, next to him were two defenders following closely, and in front of the goal was only a very narrow gap. "At that time, I didn't think much, just put all my energy into the only option, which was to kick the ball. I had to try to kick as hard as possible," the captain of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism recalled.
Van Thuc swung his leg to kick into the only corner, in the only possible choice. The ball went into the net, creating the only goal to help Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism overcome Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in the quarterfinals of the 3rd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2025 THACO Cup.
Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism (purple shirt) won a ticket to the semi-finals.
Van Thuc's "think less, do more" style of handling the game also represents the spirit of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism in this year's tournament. Just keep fighting, and you'll get there.
An interesting detail about Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament is that while the teams (except the team playing the opening match) only brought a part of their forces to the parade, Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism brought... the whole team.
"We want to enjoy the atmosphere of the student football field. Enjoy every moment, immerse ourselves in every match," coach Nguyen Cong Thanh shared.
The presence of Thanh Hoa representative in the final round was actually a surprise. In the northern qualifying play-off, Mr. Cong Thanh and his team had to face the current runner-up, Thuy Loi University. Facing the strongest team in the student playground, and having to play away from home under great pressure from Thuy Loi fans, Van Thuc and his teammates still fought silently.
Holding the opponent to a 0-0 draw in regulation time, then winning the penalty shootout. That is the way of playing that carries the character of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism: as stubborn as a "tank".
Coach Nguyen Cong Thanh (far left) left a strong impression
Coach Cong Thanh and his students brought that spirit to the final round of the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament. "What happened in the qualifying round belongs to the qualifying round. We respect all opponents. The teams that have reached the final round are all strong. We have our own strengths, and so do our opponents. The whole team only has in mind that we must play our best," the coach of the Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism team recounted.
With the spirit of "playing well wherever you go", the team of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism kept overcoming each corner. Playing tightly in the draw with Van Hien University in the opening match, using all their strength to defeat the University of Science and Technology (VNU-HCMC), ending the group stage with a rain of goals with the University of Physical Education and Sports of Da Nang. Then when Van Thuc and his teammates defeated Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology with the minimum score in the quarter-finals to enter the round of 4 strongest teams, the image of a championship candidate appeared.
Tight and scientific
The core squad of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism is very strong, with Ngan Nhu Dung, Nguyen Van Anh and Ha Lam Thanh having trained at the U.19 level, and goalkeeper Thatsaphone Xaiyasone (Laos) being a quality foreign player with an impressive physique and a strong mentality.
However, coach Nguyen Cong Thanh's team does not depend on individuals, but plays with collective spirit. "The coaching staff always tells the players to play with collective spirit, to push each other, and to look at each other while playing," coach Cong Thanh recounted.
That spirit was imbued in the players, as the "hero" Le Van Thuc modestly shared that he only tried to contribute a small part to the team's success after the quarter-final match.
Before the second half of the match against Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology began, Mr. Thanh carefully advised his students that "you cannot rely on anyone other than yourself, so try to stick together and advise each other."
It is no coincidence that all 6 goals that Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism scored in this year's tournament came in the second half, including some in the last minute. That is the strategy of the representative from the northern region. Tight defense, controlling the rhythm of play, then choosing the right time to attack when the opponent is exhausted. This way of playing requires a high level of team spirit. The players really helped each other overcome difficulties to reach the semi-finals.
Answering the question "did we think we could go this far when we first participated in the tournament?", captain Van Thuc of Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism said no. "The whole team just kept fighting," Van Thuc affirmed.
Coach Nguyen Cong Thanh also did not set a far-fetched goal, but only told his students to try their best so that they would have no regrets.
Taking small steps, Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism is getting closer to the student football throne.
