Join hands to rebuild schools

On September 20, Giao thong Newspaper coordinated with Vietnam Automobile Transport Association and Yen Bai Department of Transport and philanthropists to continue the journey of free transportation of relief goods to flood victims in Yen Bai with the spirit of "National love - Compatriotism" and school reconstruction.

From Mau A town, Van Yen district, the volunteer group headed to Xuan Tam, Phong Du Ha, and Phong Du Thuong communes. On the more than 40km road, there were many sections with deep ravines on one side, landslides, and mud that made the wheels slippery.

The road to the highland communes of Van Yen district, Yen Bai is difficult due to mud and landslides.

Arriving at Dong An - Phong Du - Gia Hoi route, the vehicle with license plate 15H-049.22 carrying relief goods got stuck in the mud. After about 1 hour, with the enthusiastic help of the people carrying rocks and boards, the convoy continued to move to Xuan Tam Primary and Secondary School.

The school is located in the center of the commune with 530 students, of which 87 are boarding students following the model of raising people. Over the years, with the attention and support of the State, agencies, businesses, organizations and individuals, Xuan Tam Primary and Secondary School has been invested in building a spacious, clean and beautiful school, meeting the needs of students studying and living at school.

Just a few days into the new school year, storm number 3 and its circulation caused serious landslides that damaged many important structures.

Mr. Tran Duc Thinh, Chairman of Xuan Tam Commune People's Committee, said: The huge amount of rock and soil, estimated at about 5,000m3, fell from the hill behind the school on the afternoon of September 8, causing the walls of some boarding rooms and classrooms to collapse; burying 2 toilets in the boarding area, 2 restrooms; damaging the electrical system, many tables, chairs, teaching and learning equipment... The initial damage estimate is nearly 700 million VND.

Looking at the row of houses affected by the landslide, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Principal of Xuan Tam Primary and Secondary School, shared: "Currently, boarding students have no place to stay and have to go home during the day. The work of overcoming the consequences is also facing many difficulties because the area is divided, the mud has not dried yet, and large vehicles cannot access the landslide site. At this time, the rain is still continuing, so no one dares to clean up for fear of further landslides. The school has had to fence off this area to prevent students from getting close, which could cause unpredictable consequences."

Understanding the difficulties at Xuan Tam Primary and Secondary School, Giao Thong Newspaper and Vietnam Automobile Transport Association have called for, together with benefactors, to immediately donate 200 million VND to rebuild the school as well as provide some necessities for boarding students.

Receiving the material and spiritual support from the charity group, the leaders of Xuan Tam commune and the school board could not hide their emotions and pledged to use the money for the right purpose. In the shortest time, they will level the landslide and rebuild the damaged structures, helping the children to study with peace of mind.

Sharing with ethnic minorities

On this occasion, the delegation also presented gifts to people, including many ethnic minorities in Phong Du Ha and Phong Du Thuong communes (Van Yen district).

Accordingly, the delegation coordinated to present 12 tons of rice and more than 1,200 gifts of necessities to households affected and facing difficulties due to natural disasters, floods and landslides in the locality; directly presented 50 gifts to families in difficult circumstances with a total amount of 2 million VND/household.

"Receiving these gifts and items helps my family to cover some of the current difficulties. Thank you very much to the benefactors who have joined hands to help us during these difficult times," said Mr. Tinh.

Traveling hundreds of kilometers to deliver relief goods to people in the highlands, student Nguyen Cong Minh (Hanoi) shared: "I want to contribute my small efforts to help people transport food and supplies to people affected by storms and floods. If I have the opportunity, I will continue to make more meaningful trips like this."

Talking to Giao thong Newspaper, Mr. Dao Ngoc Hung, Chairman of the Trade Union, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Yen Bai province said: The recent storm No. 3 caused landslides on many national highways with nearly 200 points, and landslides on provincial roads in 370 places with a volume of rock and soil of nearly 250,000m3. Rural traffic routes were eroded at over 1,000 points with a total volume of rock and soil of over 1,000m3.

"As for Phong Du Ha and Phong Du Thuong communes, the road has been temporarily opened but still affects people's travel. The presence of the volunteer group is a great source of encouragement for us. We are very appreciative and will do our best to quickly overcome the consequences of natural disasters and stabilize people's lives," Mr. Hung shared.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Chairman of the Giao Thong Newspaper Trade Union, said that on September 19-20, the delegation went through 6 communes and towns of Tran Yen and Van Yen districts to join hands to share and help people affected by storms and floods.

"The damage caused by storms and floods is difficult to measure. Only by witnessing it with your own eyes and visiting people in flooded areas can you see the devastating damage caused by natural disasters. I hope that people will soon overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives," Mr. Thang said.
