Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan recently had a working session with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) delegation led by Under Secretary Alexis Taylor, in charge of Trade and Foreign Affairs.

Also attending the meeting were leaders of the Department of European - American Markets, Department of Domestic Markets, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade Defense, and Department of Import and Export.

In the context of the Vietnam-US relationship being upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership for one year, the two sides have shown strong determination in expanding economic and trade cooperation.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan affirmed: "The US is Vietnam's leading important partner and wishes to further promote trade and investment relations between the two countries."

Mr. Tan hopes that the Vietnam-US relationship, which has been upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, will open up many opportunities for cooperation in all areas, including economics and trade. "The Ministry of Industry and Trade in particular will continue to proactively cooperate with the US to comprehensively address the concerns of both countries, maintain stable trade relations, and move towards a harmonious and sustainable trade balance."

Notably, the issue of opening the market for agricultural products received special attention during the working session. In recent times, the work of opening the market for agricultural products of both countries has been one of the top priorities and has achieved much progress.

As evidence, the US has allowed the import of fresh coconuts from Vietnam and is in the final stages of granting import licenses for passion fruit.

In the opposite direction, Vietnam also opened its doors to grapefruit (February 2023), peaches, and nectarines from the US in July 2024. In addition, agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and USDA are completing procedures for other products such as oranges, tangerines, plums, and seedless lemons.

This move shows the efforts of both sides in diversifying the list of agricultural products allowed for exchange, promising to bring great benefits to the agricultural sector and consumers of both countries.

Deputy Minister Alexis Taylor proposed that both sides continue to promote relevant processes to open the market to more types of fruit.

In addition, the US also wants to facilitate the import of some plant products and animal feed from the US to Vietnam.

The meeting also addressed other important issues such as cooperation in biofuels, ethanol and concerns over trade defense investigations.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan proposed that the US support and invest technical and technological resources to develop the production and use of biofuel in Vietnam, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's commitments at COP26.

From September 9 to 13, 2024, a trade delegation from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) led by Ms. Alexis Taylor, Deputy Secretary of USDA, began a series of activities to promote US agricultural products in the Vietnamese market.
Accompanying USDA Deputy Secretary Alexis Taylor were representatives from more than 50 businesses, agricultural organizations, 9 states, and 21 industry associations of the US agricultural sector.
Ms. Alexis Taylor said that this promotion trip is also an opportunity for American policymakers and business people to better understand the Vietnamese consumer market, thereby having a more effective approach.
In addition to activities at supermarkets and stores, the delegation will also visit factories and production facilities in Vietnam that are using imported materials from the US such as seeds, cereal powder, etc.
"Currently, the US is a major export market for Vietnam and Vietnam is also the second largest market for the US in the field of agricultural and food exports. The characteristics of agricultural products of the two countries are highly complementary, especially fruits, so there is still a lot of room for further exploration.
Through the promotion trip, trade mission participants will connect with key importers to meet businesses and learn about market conditions in Vietnam and the region.
