Cameras will have to meet information security standards.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Information Technology Industry (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that the policy and strategy "Make in Vietnam" was launched by the Ministry of Information and Communications in 2019 with the meaning "Vietnamese enterprises strive to gradually master technology, proactively design and manufacture products, and proactively create new services, solutions, and business models".

Vietnamese digital technology enterprises will contribute to the mission of making Vietnam a developed industrial country, the Vietnamese economy will break through, develop rapidly, sustainably, and inclusively with the goal of making Vietnam a high-income country by 2045.

In 2023, the Ministry of Information and Communications identified it as the year to implement signed strategies and plans such as the National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030; National Strategy for Digital Economy and Digital Society Development to 2025, with a vision to 2030...

In order to achieve the set goals in implementing the above Programs and Strategies, Vietnam is in dire need of digital technology platforms and products Made in Vietnam, including camera products, especially the safe and secure Make in Vietnam camera product line produced by Vietnam itself to build safe and smart cities.

“The Ministry of Information and Communications always identifies the issue of ensuring information security for security camera systems as paramount and in the coming time, the Ministry will review and develop standards for security camera equipment to ensure that the equipment supplied on the market meets safety and security standards.

“Make in Vietnam security camera equipment and solutions will enrich the Make in Vietnam product ecosystem in the coming time, creating an opportunity for state agencies, businesses and people to have more choices of Make in Vietnam security products and solutions,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen.

Concerns about information security with imported cameras

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, CEO of Pavana, Vietnam imports about 5 million cameras each year, of which most camera brands originate from China. Controlling the security issues of security cameras is not only important in terms of where they are manufactured, but also involves many issues such as: Electronic circuit design; control software; transmission, server management system must be located in Vietnam or systems that ensure safety and security for users. Therefore, we not only place production in Vietnam but also need to control these stages and the Government as well as Vietnamese enterprises need to be unanimous in this issue.

“Pavana and MK Vision expect Vietnam to have a ‘Make in Vietnam security and safety camera network’. This is not only the task and responsibility of the authorities but also requires the joint efforts of all Vietnamese technology enterprises in general, including units like Pavana and MK Vision,” said Mr. Kien.

Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, CEO of SCS Cyber Security Company, pointed out a number of cases of camera data leaks in the world and in Vietnam, such as the leak of 150,000 Verkada security cameras due to the admin's account being exposed. Recently, there was an illegal intrusion by hackers into more than 100 million Hikvision cameras due to an unpatched firmware vulnerability.

“From these incidents, we can see that to ensure the security camera system, we must ensure security in all stages, from hardware production to firmware construction, transmission line connection, cloud system; camera storage and processing system; administrators or end-user applications also need solutions to ensure security,” said Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh.

According to Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, through many cases, it shows that more than 90% of camera data leaks come from weak user authentication passwords. The causes can create vulnerabilities in the camera, the connection system between the camera and the central system and cloud; vulnerabilities in the operation and administration process; vulnerabilities in user applications...

"No one can guarantee that our system is 100% safe and cannot be attacked. Therefore, one of the important components in the security camera system is the monitoring system to detect abnormalities as soon as possible, thereby having immediate reactions to minimize risks as much as possible," Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh shared.
