Ukraine's grain exports to increase in early 2023 crop year

Ukraine's grain exports have been affected since Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative deal last month, but the Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry did not mention the issue.

Ukraine's total grain exports since the beginning of the 2023-2024 crop year to date include: 1.27 million tons of corn, 977,000 tons of wheat and 329,000 tons of barley. During the same period of the previous crop year (as of August 6, 2022), 1.3 million tons of corn, 467,000 tons of wheat and 180,000 tons of barley were exported. The total amount of grain exported in the entire 2022-2023 crop year reached nearly 49 million tons, exceeding 48.4 million tons compared to the previous crop year.

Most of the grain is exported through deep-water ports on the Black Sea under the Black Sea Grain Initiative launched last July to ease the global food crisis by allowing Ukrainian grain exports that had been blocked after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

However, Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey on July 17 due to the non-fulfillment of provisions related to Russia's interests in the deal.

Within the framework of the initiative, Russia and the United Nations signed a memorandum of understanding on facilitating the supply of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to world markets, while Ukraine signed an agreement with Türkiye and the United Nations on the safe export of food and fertilizers from Ukraine via the Black Sea. The agreement was extended three times and expired on July 17.

Observers are now concerned that Russia’s withdrawal from the deal will severely impact global grain supplies, especially for countries that rely on cheap grain from Russia and Ukraine. When the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in late February 2022, global grain and fertilizer prices quickly skyrocketed to record highs.

A major grain grower and exporter, Ukraine's grain output has fallen to around 53 million tonnes in 2022 from a record 86 million tonnes in 2021. Grain output could fall to around 46 million tonnes this year, the Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry said.
