Vietnam is currently Mexico's 10th largest trading partner in the world, surpassing traditional partners such as Spain, India, Italy, France and the UK.

According to a VNA correspondent in Mexico, speaking at the 79th Anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2023) organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico on September 12, Mr. Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe - Director General of the Asia-Pacific Department, Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) - affirmed that this is a solid foundation for the two countries to be determined to upgrade their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership in the coming time.

Congratulating the Vietnamese people on the 79th anniversary of National Day, Mr. Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe emphasized that Vietnam and Mexico not only share many similarities in the history of the struggle for national liberation, but also in the fierce fight against corruption, as well as core views in international relations, which are respect for multilateralism and the principle of peaceful coexistence between nations.

Mr. Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe – a diplomat who worked at the Mexican Embassy in Vietnam – assessed that these views were vividly reflected in the famous saying “More friends, less enemies” by the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, as well as Vietnam’s unique “bamboo diplomacy” school, which is courageous and resilient but still extremely flexible and adaptable.

Speaking at the ceremony attended by hundreds of guests, the appointed Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai reviewed the glorious journey of the Vietnamese people during 79 years of building and defending the Fatherland, emphasizing the outstanding efforts and achievements of Vietnam in the fields of foreign affairs, politics and economics on the path of international integration and national development.

According to Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai, throughout the struggle for national independence and development, Vietnam has received invaluable assistance and support from the international community, including Mexican friends. This good relationship has been increasingly expanded in many areas, from politics, economics to cultural diplomacy, as well as demonstrated in mutual support at international forums such as the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

In addition, Vietnam and Mexico continue to maintain regular and effective consultation mechanisms, including Political Consultation sessions between the two foreign ministries and meetings of the Joint Committee on Economic, Trade and Investment Cooperation between Vietnam and Mexico.

Regarding bilateral trade, the Ambassador said that Mexico is currently Vietnam's second largest trading partner in Latin America, and Vietnam is also Mexico's second largest trading partner in ASEAN. Bilateral trade turnover is growing stronger as both countries are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

For President of the Vietnamese Association in Mexico Nguyen Huu Dong, in the more than 30 years since settling in Mexico, Independence Day has always been one of the events he looks forward to the most, because it is an opportunity for him to meet all his relatives, talk in his native language and listen to updated information about the situation in the country.

Recalling President Ho Chi Minh's New Year's Letter to Overseas Vietnamese in 1946: "The Fatherland and the Government always miss our compatriots, just like parents miss their children who are away. That is the human heart and the heavens, that is the love of a family", Mr. Dong - who worked in information work at the Paris Conference in 1968 between the delegations of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the United States, said that this was a saying that followed him throughout the years living far away from the Fatherland.

As the first Vietnamese person introduced by the Vietnamese Government to work for the United Nations in the early 1980s, with decades of work as an international election monitoring expert in many countries until his retirement in Mexico, Mr. Dong said that thanks to the right foreign policy, Vietnam's position has been increasingly enhanced in the eyes of international friends.

According to the veteran diplomat, from an isolated country, Vietnam has broken the embargo and proactively integrated. For him, this is most vividly demonstrated on every occasion of Vietnam's National Day, when each year more international friends come to attend, with firm handshakes.
