Within the framework of activities to enhance cooperation between Vietnam and Mexican localities, from October 24-25, a delegation of the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico led by appointed Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai visited and worked in Guanajuato state to seek cooperation opportunities between the two countries as well as between Vietnamese localities and the state.

The delegation had meetings and worked with leading local businesses, attended the Trade Promotion Forum, and visited and worked at a number of typical production facilities.

During a working session with businesses in the Zone Bajio region - a geographical area comprising the states of Guanajuato, Queretaro and Michoacan in Central Mexico - Ambassador-designate Nguyen Van Hai highlighted Vietnam's economic, trade and investment achievements over nearly 40 years of renovation, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increasing by an average of 6%-6.5% over the past 30 years.

Thanks to appropriate and right-directed innovation policies, Vietnam has become one of the countries with outstanding development in many fields, the leading country in attracting investment in the group of emerging economies, attracting thousands of businesses from more than 100 countries, including the world's leading corporations such as Samsung, Toyota, Ford, Intel...

According to the Ambassador, Vietnam attracted 36.6 billion USD in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2023, an increase of 32% compared to 2022. Notably, in the first 9 months of 2024, Vietnam attracted 25 billion USD in FDI, an increase of 11.6% compared to the same period in 2023, despite the negative impacts from geopolitical instability in the world.

Meanwhile, speaking at the Vietnam-San Miguel de Allende Trade and Tourism Promotion Forum, an event jointly organized by the Vietnamese Embassy and Mexico's Senoro Group, Ambassador-designate Nguyen Van Hai highlighted the advantages of investing in Vietnam, including the high openness of the economy as well as macroeconomic stability.

In addition, located in the central geographical position of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam acts as a gateway for international investors to penetrate the market of this region of 650 million people, as well as a bridge to 200 countries and territories that are currently Vietnam's trading partners.

Highlighting the potential of the Vietnamese market for Mexican businesses, especially when the purchasing power of this country of 100 million people increases in proportion to the GDP growth rate, the Ambassador said that according to calculations, about 50% of the Vietnamese population will join the middle class by 2035, thereby creating more business opportunities for businesses.

Regarding international trade, the Ambassador informed that Vietnam's export turnover in 2023 will reach 354.7 billion USD and import turnover will reach 326.4 billion USD. Meanwhile, GDP in 2023 will reach 430 billion USD and is expected to reach 505 billion USD in 2025 in the context of the world economy still facing many difficulties and challenges.

Regarding the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Mexico, the appointed Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai said that the relationship between the two countries is being promoted in all areas such as politics, economics, trade, culture, education and tourism; and affirmed that trade will continue to grow strongly as the two countries are both members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Speaking at the forum, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Mexico Luu Van Khang informed about bilateral trade relations, the strengths of the two countries that can be exchanged and complemented, as well as proposed some potential cooperation directions.

According to Mr. Luu Van Khang, bilateral trade still has a lot of room for development, especially in the context that many Mexican businesses are increasingly interested in Vietnamese goods to replace products from other countries that are being investigated for anti-dumping.

However, trade is facing difficulties due to the lack of direct transportation routes connecting the two countries, causing import and export prices to increase and reducing product competitiveness.

On behalf of the local government, Ms. Laura Mayela Rodriguez, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of San Miguel de Allende City, said that the forum is not only a great opportunity for business connections, but also a premise for local businesses to have more information about the Vietnamese market, especially in areas that both sides can share.

Meanwhile, at the forum, many local businesses asked questions related to the Vietnamese economy and market, and expressed their desire to learn about the potential for cooperation in many industries, especially tourism, agriculture and logistics.

Also within the framework of the visit and work in Guanajuato, the delegation of the Vietnamese Embassy visited, learned from experience and promoted trade at a number of handicraft production facilities in San Miguel de Allende - a famous tourist city of Mexico, and visited the Highland Queen vegetable export facility with an area of 600 hectares owned by Vietnamese people.
