On December 5, the Vietnamese Embassy and the Office of the Vietnamese Defense Attaché in Mexico jointly organized a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024) and the 35th anniversary of National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024).

The ceremony was attended by more than 200 guests including representatives of political parties, the Ministry of National Defense , the Ministry of Navy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions, the International Defense Attaché Corps in Mexico, and staff of Vietnamese representative agencies and the Vietnamese community in Mexico.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai reviewed the glorious milestones in the 80-year journey of building, fighting and growing of the Vietnam People's Army; affirming the mettle of a revolutionary army, born from the people, fighting for the people, worthy of being a special political force, an absolutely loyal and trustworthy fighting force of the Party, State and People of Vietnam.

According to the Ambassador, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam , with the broad support of the people and international friends, the Vietnam People's Army has achieved glorious victories in the struggle for national liberation, building and defending the Fatherland, recording in history brilliant milestones such as the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, culminating in the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, completely liberating the South and reunifying the country.

Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai stated that in implementing the country's consistent foreign policy in recent years, the Vietnam People's Army has actively promoted international integration and defense diplomacy at both bilateral and multilateral levels; at the same time, it has promoted participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, international cooperation in the fields of non-traditional security, humanitarian assistance, search and rescue, and overcoming the consequences of war, contributing significantly to creating an environment of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Emphasizing that defense diplomacy has become one of the pillars of the Party's foreign affairs and State diplomacy, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai said that Vietnam is currently participating in many multilateral military and defense mechanisms and forums in the region and internationally, has defense relations with more than 100 countries, and has established military attaché offices and defense attaché offices in 35 countries as well as at the United Nations.

Representing the Mexican Ministry of Defense, Major General Jose Filiberto Nuñez Salina stated that Mexico and Vietnam share many similarities in the history of the struggle for national liberation as well as core values of peace-loving spirit, awareness of independence and national sovereignty. The traditional friendship between the two countries still has a lot of room for further development, especially in politics, defense and trade.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pedro Vázquez González, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Mexican House of Representatives, affirmed that President Ho Chi Minh himself was a legend, but the fact that President Ho Chi Minh established the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army - the predecessor of the Vietnam People's Army - at the initial time with only 34 soldiers on December 22, 1944 continues to be a legend.

According to the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Mexican House of Representatives, it was this army with humble beginnings that later won many victories against large and modernly equipped invading armies, thereby continuing to write glorious pages of history about a small but heroic nation.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese Embassy and the Office of the Vietnamese Defense Attaché in Mexico also coordinated to organize a photo exhibition about the country and people of Vietnam and the good multifaceted cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Mexico.

Previously, on December 2, the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico held an opening ceremony for the Vietnamese Defense Attaché Office in Mexico, right before the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025. This is also a step to realize the policy of upgrading the relationship between the two countries to a Comprehensive Partnership in the coming time.

The Defense Attaché Office next to the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico will be the representative office of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, performing advisory functions and conducting defense foreign affairs activities to enhance mutual understanding, promote friendly relations, bilateral defense cooperation as well as other foreign affairs tasks, contributing to the development and deepening of the traditional Vietnam-Mexico relationship./.
