Most flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities are fully booked.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said so when updating the booking situation and domestic airfares for the Lunar New Year 2025 until January 3.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, at the beginning of the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday (from January 21 to 28, or from December 22 to 29), the booking rate on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities is increasing rapidly and is almost full.
Some routes have reached 90% to 100% booking rate, such as: Hanoi - Buon Ma Thuot (100%), Ho Chi Minh City to Hue, Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Quy Nhon, Buon Ma Thuot, Quang Binh, Thanh Hoa, Vinh are all 100% full...
At the end of the Tet holiday (from January 30 to February 7, 2025, from January 2 to 10), the booking rate showed a high increase on flights from the local area back to Ho Chi Minh City.
In particular, some days on the routes have a booking rate of reaching or approaching 100% such as from Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon, Chu Lai, Dong Hoi, Buon Ma Thuot, Vinh... to Ho Chi Minh City...
For the main routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi and vice versa, the occupancy rate in the period from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (ie December 26 to January 5) is increasing rapidly. The Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang routes on some days near Tet have had a booking rate of over 80%.
Airfares are selling at high prices, many routes are sold out of economy class tickets
Through a survey, the Civil Aviation Authority found that basic economy class airfares (excluding taxes and fees) on domestic flights on days close to the 2025 Lunar New Year from Ho Chi Minh City to the provinces were listed at high levels by airlines, with many routes even sold out of economy class tickets.
Specifically, on January 22 (December 23), the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Hanoi has a basic economy class ticket price currently listed by airlines at about 2.9 million VND.
On January 25 (the first day of Tet holiday), many flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Thanh Hoa, Vinh were all "sold out".
Meanwhile, in the opposite direction, flights from the North and Central regions to Ho Chi Minh City in the days before Tet, airlines had to operate many empty flights (ferries) due to lack of passengers.
Therefore, on January 22, 25 and 27, on flights from Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Thanh Hoa, Pleiku, Dong Hoi, Chu Lai... to Ho Chi Minh City, both Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet listed prices from only 90,000 VND.
For flights from Hai Phong, Vinh, Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietjet offers promotional fares starting from 0 VND. Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines also offer fares starting from 25,000 VND on flights from Da Nang, Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.
However, before Tet, on tourist flights from Hanoi to Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc, the price of round-trip tickets does not have a significant difference, fluctuating from only nearly 1 - 3 million VND depending on the route.
On January 25 alone, some airlines sold out all economy class tickets on flights from Hanoi to Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc, etc.
Many flights from North to South after Tet holiday are also sold out.
After Tet holiday, people return to work so ticket prices from the Northern and Central provinces to Ho Chi Minh City have reversed compared to before Tet.
On February 2 (the end of Tet holiday), sold-out tickets were recorded on many routes from Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Nha Trang, Thanh Hoa, Pleiku, Dong Hoi, Vinh, Chu Lai... to Ho Chi Minh City.
Also on this day, on flights from tourist destinations such as Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc… to Hanoi, some airlines were also sold out.
As of February 8, airfares still showed a lopsided trend, with flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, Pleiku, Vinh, Noi Bai airports... listed by airlines as low as 0 VND, while in the opposite direction, ticket prices remained high.
To ensure the travel needs of passengers during the 2025 Lunar New Year, the Civil Aviation Authority has directed the airports: Tho Xuan, Dong Hoi, Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Pleiku and Tuy Hoa to deploy a 24/24-hour operation plan to meet the night flight needs of airlines.
At the same time, the Civil Aviation Authority also issued an official dispatch requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities to direct relevant departments, agencies, and taxi and technology car service providers to increase operating hours, increase the number of vehicles, and increase bus frequency to serve passengers, especially passengers on night flights to and from the airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority said it will continue to ask Vietnamese airlines to study and consider increasing flights on currently full routes from Ho Chi Minh City to the northern and central provinces on days before Tet based on operating capacity, airport infrastructure and ensuring safety and security.
