(Dan Tri) - President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine is maintaining a "buffer zone" in Russia's Kursk province.
In a speech on the evening of January 26, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is maintaining a "buffer zone" in Russia's Kursk province to protect the Ukrainian cities of Sumy and Kharkov from Russian attacks.
"Today there were several military briefings with commanders, as well as conversations with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, focusing on the situation on the front line, our main fronts in the Donetsk region and the areas of the Kursk operation," President Zelensky said.
"The next 6 months will be our active operations in Kursk province to protect Ukrainian land. We are maintaining a buffer zone on Russian territory to protect Sumy and Kharkov from Russian attacks," Mr. Zelensky confirmed.
Earlier, Mr. Viktor Kravtsov, representative of the 82nd Bukovyna Brigade of Ukraine, said that due to fierce fighting and heavy losses, the Russian army sent the 76th Air Assault Division to the Kursk region to increase offensive operations there.
Asked how the fighting in the Kursk region is affecting the situation on the Ukrainian frontline, Mr Kravtsov said it is helping to reduce pressure on the Ukrainian army on the eastern front.
Ukraine launched an offensive operation into Russia's Kursk border province on August 6. The Kursk operation took place after Ukrainian intelligence received information that Russia was preparing to launch an offensive in the direction of Kursk to Ukraine's Sumy region to establish a security buffer zone.
Kiev’s decision to attack Kursk province was both to thwart Moscow’s efforts and to force Russia to divert resources and reduce pressure on its defense forces on the eastern front. In addition, the Kursk operation was expected to help Kiev improve its position in potential future negotiations with Russia through control of the territory there.
Ukraine initially claimed control of more than 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory in Kursk. However, the Ukrainian advance has stalled and they now control only half of the territory they initially gained. The Russian Defense Ministry said that so far, Ukraine has lost more than 32,000 troops and a large amount of weapons and equipment in Kursk.
While mobilizing significant forces for Kursk, Russia continued to increase offensive operations on other fronts in Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian military, Russia began launching heavy attacks on Ukrainian positions in Kursk in November 2024. Russia is believed to have amassed more than 50,000 troops, including North Korean servicemen, to launch a large-scale counteroffensive to push back Ukrainian forces in Kursk when US President Donald Trump took office in January.
