As part of the strategy of training and developing young players, thereby creating a more abundant source of successors for the national team to achieve big goals in the future, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has actively developed an action plan for the youth teams to effectively carry out key tasks in the coming period and the following periods. With the above orientation, and based on the schedule of international tournaments in 2023, the VFF has decided to establish 2 Vietnam U23 teams for the tasks of the 2024 AFC U23 Qualifiers, the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship and the 19th ASIAD. The Vietnam U23 team participating in the 2024 AFC U23 Qualifiers is led by Mr. Troussier, while the Vietnam U23 team participating in the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship and the 19th ASIAD is coached by Coach Hoang Anh Tuan.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan is a person who has made many important contributions to the training and development of the next generation of players for the national team. He is also the first person to bring U19 Vietnam to the final round of the U20 FIFA World Cup 2017. At the upcoming 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, Coach Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed that although the VFF does not put pressure on achievements, the whole team will still try to compete for the best results, especially to demonstrate beautiful and dedicated playing style as well as maximize the qualities of the next generation of young players for the national teams in the future.
Along with that, the coach from Khanh Hoa said that the biggest pressure for him is to find excellent players for the national team. "I hope that in the future, besides creating a source of players to inherit for the national teams, there will also be a team of coaches to inherit for the national teams" - Coach Hoang Anh Tuan shared.
As someone who has a close relationship with the head coach of the national team Philippe Troussier, Mr. Tuan affirmed the importance of creating a connection in terms of playing style between the current U23 Vietnam team and the Vietnam team led by Mr. Troussier. Sharing about the playing style that will shape the team in the upcoming tournament, Coach Anh Tuan said: "It is not necessarily just about attacking or defending. I want to bring diversity, so that the players can respond if they play for the national team. Of course, this is the next generation of the national team, so there must be synchronization. Coach Troussier has a philosophy of controlling the ball and attacking, and our Vietnamese players have the qualities of being agile and skillful, so they are very suitable for the ball control style of play."
The 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship hosted by Thailand will take place from August 17 to August 26, 2023. According to the draw results, the Vietnam U23 team is in Group C with the Philippines U23 team and Laos U23 team. To prepare for this tournament, the Vietnam U23 team has been training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center since July 29 until now. Since the first day of training, up to now, coach Hoang Anh Tuan has just been reinforced with 5 quality players joining the team, namely defender Nguyen Van Trieu, midfielder Nguyen Duc Viet, striker Nguyen Quoc Viet of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, defender Le Van Ha of SHB Da Nang and striker Nguyen Minh Quang from Binh Thuan Club. U23 Vietnam has accelerated the training cycle to have the best preparation for the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. U23 Vietnam continues to increase physical training with traditional strength training exercises combined with tactical training, practicing coordination of passing and one-touch football.
According to the plan, the team will leave for Thailand on August 14 for training and final preparations. Notably, before officially entering the journey at the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, the team will have a friendly match as a rehearsal with the Bahrain U23 team. This match will take place on August 15 in Thailand.
