On March 21, billionaire Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, published a 7-page document titled “The Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Has Begun,” outlining his views on the future of AI.

Mr. Bill Gates assessed that the development of AI "is as fundamental as the creation of microprocessors, personal computers, the internet and mobile phones.

Besides his optimism about AI, billionaire Bill Gates also expressed concern about the risk of humans abusing this technology, as well as the possibility of AI becoming super intelligent or powerful enough to set its own goals when this technology is improved in the future.

In the paper, Bill Gates outlines his thoughts on how AI can be used as a tool to improve labor productivity and reduce global inequality in labor, health care, and education.

Regarding labor, he believes that AI will act as a “digital assistant” to improve productivity. AI will be integrated into digital work tools such as Microsoft Office, which can help manage and write emails. In addition, AI will create “personal assistants” equipped with extensive knowledge and data about the company and expertise, which can interact to support workers.

In healthcare, a “digital assistant” can take on the heavy lifting, freeing healthcare workers from certain tasks, such as filing insurance claims, completing paperwork and drafting doctor’s visit notes.

Notably, in poor countries where patients do not have access to doctors, AI can help medical staff work more effectively. In addition, AI can also support treatment for patients who do not live near medical facilities. Billionaire Bill Gates predicts that the next step is that AI can help predict drug side effects and calculate dosages.

In agriculture, AI can breed crop varieties suited to local climates and develop vaccines for livestock—developments that are crucial in the face of extreme weather and climate change, especially for farmers in low-income countries.

Regarding education, the Microsoft founder believes that the teaching profession will not disappear, but teachers will need to adapt. AI can change education in the next 5-10 years by providing content that suits students' learning styles, and learning what motivates and disengages students from subjects.

AI can also assist teachers by planning lessons and assessing students’ understanding of classroom topics. Billionaire Bill Gates asserts: “Even when technology is perfect, learning will still depend on a close relationship between students and teachers.”

“To make the most of this revolutionary new technology, we need to both guard against the risks and spread the benefits to as many people as possible,” he concluded.
