'The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year will increase the number of application questions to 40%, instead of 25-30% as before,' said Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, 2025 is the first year that 9th grade students will take the 10th grade entrance exam according to the 2018 general education program.

"Therefore, the ratio of knowledge level distribution in the exam is also adjusted, reducing the level of recognition and understanding, increasing the rate of application.

Specifically, for entrance exams from 2024 and earlier, due to the application of the 2006 general education program, the number of questions at the recognition and comprehension level will account for 70 - 75% of the knowledge in the exam.

From 2025, the number of questions requiring recognition and understanding will decrease to 60%, and the number of questions requiring application will increase to 40%. This adjustment aims to assess the ability to apply learned knowledge to solve practical problems - according to the orientation of the 2018 general education program," said Mr. Quoc.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc gave advice: teachers need to innovate teaching methods towards developing learning capacity; Equip and train students with self-study and problem-solving skills, avoiding the situation of rote learning.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 will take place on June 6 and 7. Candidates will take 3 subjects: math, literature (120 minutes/subject), foreign language (90 minutes).

Candidates registering for the entrance exam to specialized high schools in the city must take the fourth subject (specialized subject) with a test time of 150 minutes/subject.

In particular, the literature exam will be based on the requirements for reading and writing in the 2018 general education program, mainly grades 8 and 9. The exam is designed to integrate the assessment of reading comprehension and writing skills, with the content in the writing section related to the text in the reading comprehension section.

The math exam will include the following knowledge streams: geometry and measurement; numbers and algebra; statistics and probability. The exam content aims to assess mathematical abilities such as: mathematical thinking and reasoning; mathematical problem solving; mathematical modeling.

The English test aims to assess language proficiency not only based on students' memorized knowledge of grammar and vocabulary; the test also aims to assess the ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts, especially real-life situations.

The rate of students entering public 10th grade will increase.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City - said that the department is reviewing to determine the enrollment quota for public grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year. It is expected that public high schools will enroll 70% of students who have graduated from junior high school or higher.

According to Mr. Hieu, the department will base on the conditions of facilities and teaching staff to determine the enrollment quota for public grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year for each high school. The basis for determining the quota is based on the ability of public schools to receive students, not based on the orientation of student streaming after junior high school as in previous years.

It is expected that this year, Ho Chi Minh City will increase the rate of junior high school graduates enrolling in public grade 10. Last year, Ho Chi Minh City recruited 65% of junior high school graduates to enroll in public grade 10, but this year, the rate will be at least 70%.

In some areas where high schools have many places to study, the rate of junior high school graduates entering public grade 10 will be higher - depending on the number of places in each school" - Mr. Hieu informed.
