Tuchel counterattacks two former Bayern players

Germany After a 4-0 win over Dortmund in the Bundesliga, coach Thomas Tuchel responded to criticism from Lothar Matthaus and Didi Hamann over the previous defeat against Saarbrucken in the DFB-Pokal.

"With the players' conflict with the coach, plus the lack of progress, it was surprising that we won 4-0 against Dortmund," Thomas Tuchel told Didi Hamann and Lothar Matthaus live on Sky Germany on November 5. "If Lothar doesn't know what happened, then maybe Didi knows. I'm extremely happy with my team."

Tuchel also suggested that Hamann and Matthaus may be trying to change their attitudes completely. He then refused to discuss it further and left the broadcast with a congratulatory message for the two former players.

In another interview with Bild , Tuchel added: "I've been asked about Didi and Lothar every week. Today is the last day to say that. I have enough to do in my job."

When asked if he would accept a drink with Matthaus to calm the situation, Tuchel immediately refused. He affirmed that he does not drink during the season and is not in the habit of meeting TV experts.

On November 1, after witnessing Bayern lose 1-2 to third-division Saarbrucken in the second round of the German Cup, Hamann and Matthaus both criticized Tuchel. Both said that Bayern had internal conflicts and had not made any progress since Tuchel arrived in March 2023, something the coach denied before the win over Dortmund.

"The defeat in Saarbrücken was Bayern's biggest embarrassment since we were eliminated in Vestensbergsgreuth in 1994," Matthaus added. "Tuchel gambled in Saarbrücken. If I were him, I would have started with the strongest team and then changed after 50 or 60 minutes. It was a shame not to play Harry Kane and get eliminated."

In the Saarbrucken game, Tuchel kept just six starters from the team that beat Darmstadt 8-0. But against Dortmund, he returned to his strongest lineup and won 4-0, including a hat-trick from Harry Kane.

Bayern are currently unbeaten after 10 Bundesliga games, with eight wins and two draws. Tuchel's team are second on 26 points, two behind Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Dortmund are fourth on 21 points.

Matthaus won six Bundesliga titles with Bayern. The 62-year-old also won the 1990 World Cup with West Germany and the Ballon d'Or in the same year. Hamann came through the Bayern youth ranks, before playing 143 times, winning two Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Cup with the first team. Between 1999 and 2006, the former midfielder won a Champions League, a UEFA Cup, two European Super Cups, two FA Cups, two League Cups and a Community Shield with Liverpool.
