China's Foreign Ministry website quoted its Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui as saying that everyone should create conditions for peace talks.
Mr. Ly Huy stated: "There is no panacea to resolve the Ukraine crisis, all parties need to build trust and create conditions for peace talks."
The statement was made after he met with President Zelensky, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Chief of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak and other officials of the Ukrainian government during a two-day visit to the Eastern European country on May 16-17.
According to the Chinese official, Beijing is willing to support the international community in resolving the crisis, based on China's stance stated in the 12-point peace initiative, and make its own efforts to end hostilities at an early date and restore peace.
In addition, the Chinese Foreign Ministry also issued a statement saying that China and Ukraine agreed to cooperate to continue to respect each other and maintain mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries moving forward.
"Beijing has always played a constructive role in alleviating the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in its own way and will continue to provide aid to Ukraine within its capacity," the statement said.
On the same day, speaking about the Russia-Ukraine conflict ahead of the Arab League (AL) Summit, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said: "We believe that both sides need to reach a ceasefire agreement and if there is any request from either side, we are ready to support."
According to him, the conflict in Ukraine has affected the situation in the global energy and food industry, "so it is our responsibility to try to get the parties to reach a ceasefire".
Referring to the AL's mediation initiative to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, Mr. Hussein said that this proposal is "not new".
The AL established a Contact Group in March 2022, comprising the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Sudan and the AL Secretary General, and sent the group to Moscow and Kiev in the same year.
In another development, also on May 18, according to Mr. Igor Zhovkva, Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, it is not ruled out that Mr. Zelensky could directly attend the Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrialized countries in the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
"Everything will depend on the situation on the ground. The final decision will be made after carefully analyzing the situation on the battlefield," Mr. Zhovkva told Kyodo news agency.
The official also stressed that Mr Zelensky would attend the summit in some form in any case.
Meanwhile, Kyodo 's sources in the Japanese government have ruled out the possibility of the Ukrainian president going to Hiroshima in person.
