The Pentagon said on August 16 that it could not verify information published by North Korean state media about US soldier Travis King, who illegally entered North Korean territory from the Joint Security Area (JSA) of Panmunjom. Reuters reported that Washington remained focused on efforts to bring the soldier back safely. “We are working through all possible channels to achieve that,” a Pentagon spokesman said.
Previously, on July 18, the US-led United Nations Command (UNC) confirmed that King, who is serving in the US military in South Korea, crossed the border into North Korea while visiting the JSA in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) with tourists. On August 16, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) first announced information about King's case. According to the investigation results of the relevant North Korean agency, King admitted to illegally entering North Korean territory despite efforts to prevent him from entering by South Korean and US guards; at the same time, he expressed his intention to "take refuge in North Korea or a third country". KCNA said that the investigation is still underway.
