House number 193 Phan Thanh (Thanh Khe district) has been both a residence and a place where Mrs. Phan Thi Sau (74 years old) and her children have been working to earn a living. Sitting at the coffee counter, her eyes following the road ahead, where people were bustling back and forth, she muttered: "It's been decades."

Mrs. Sau lived here with her parents since she was very young, then when she grew up and got married, she was given a plot of land only 11m long and 4m wide. At that time, Phan Thanh was a narrow, flooded, and muddy road. In the late 90s of the last century, when the city had a policy to widen Phan Thanh Street under the motto "The State and the People work together", Mrs. Sau did not hesitate to voluntarily donate 5.5 meters of land.

Recalling the time when the city campaigned to widen the road, Mrs. Sau smiled gently: “At that time, the government went from house to house, persistently persuading and explaining that the new road would benefit everyone. I have lived here for many years, and I see that the roads are narrow, flooded, and difficult to travel. The government builds roads for the common good. If we keep that small road, when will we have a wide road like today for trading, so that future generations will not suffer.”

The day the machines came to level the road, Mrs. Sau was moved to tears as she saw her old wall being demolished. But when the new road gradually took shape, brick by brick was laid, and cars started to pass without having to weave through the bumpy terrain like before, she knew her decision was the right one.

Although the house is only half the size of the previous one, in return, Mrs. Sau has a clear frontage right on a busy street to do business and earn extra income. For her, the decision to donate 5.5m of land to widen the road not only contributes to changing the urban landscape but also opens up new opportunities for herself.

Phan Thanh is no longer a narrow, flooded street, but instead is lined with brightly lit shops and streams of vehicles passing by.

And the people living along the railway from Hue intersection to Hoa Cam overpass (Cam Le district) are still amazed at the road in front of their house. From a less than 2m wide railway access road that existed before 1975 with many potholes to the spacious and open road like today is a long journey.

At the end of 2014, Cam Le district authorities proposed to expand the access road and called on people to donate land. As soon as the policy was issued, the locality actively promoted the purpose and significance of expanding the road and received the consensus and support of the people.

Mr. Le Van Hung (80 years old, Hoa An ward) confidently said: “Land is an extremely valuable asset. However, when we heard that donating land could upgrade the road to a wider one, from concrete to asphalt, my family voluntarily donated more than 31m of land to build the road.”

Recalling the road leading to his house before, Mr. Phan Thanh Tan (80 years old), who lives just a few dozen meters from Mr. Hung's house, said that he did not dare to drive fast because the road was less than 2 meters long and the road surface was bumpy and full of potholes.

When hearing the local government's call for land donation to build a road, Mr. Tan's family donated 30 square meters of land. "Donating land to build a road will benefit the people a lot, improve their lives, and develop the economy. We all agree with the land donation," Mr. Tan shared.

The railway service road project passing through Hoa An, Hoa Phat and Hoa Tho Tay wards (Cam Le district) was approved in late 2014, with a length of more than 5.5km and a total investment of 144.7 billion VND.

With the consensus and cooperation of the local people and the local government, the road has now been paved with smooth asphalt and the sidewalks have been paved with clean bricks. The whole road is bright, making traffic in the area more convenient.

The newly opened roads are a living testament to the spirit of solidarity and unanimity of the city's government and people.

In the urban development flow of Da Nang, the story of new roads is always associated with the consensus of the city government and people. They are willing to donate land, dismantle gates, fences, auxiliary works... to contribute to creating a new face for Da Nang today.

The total length of the road system in Hoa Vang district is currently over 1,000 km. Of which, roads in residential areas are invested synchronously according to the planning with a length of 128 km.

For commune roads, main village roads with a length of 154km are invested with a road surface of 5.5m, and a 0.75m shoulder on each side. Alleys and alleys with 625km, the road surface is from 2m to 4m in the form of the State supporting materials, and the people organizing the construction.

Last year, the people of Hoa Vang district agreed and responded to the policy of donating land to build 13 urban roads under the motto "The State and the People work together".

In the current context of urbanization, land values are increasing, but people still share, accompany, and suffer losses to donate land to serve the community's interests, which is more meaningful than ever. The roads that the Party wants and the people want in Hoa Vang are concrete evidence of the consensus and determination of the government and the people, and are an affirmation: "It is a hundred times easier to endure without the people, and a thousand times harder to accomplish with the people".

Hai Chau is a different story, being the central area of the city, with many alleys and small lanes, many of which are only about 0.5 - 1.5m wide. People's travel is extremely difficult, greatly affecting their lives and activities.

Previously, Alley 38 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai was only 1.5m wide, making it difficult for residents to not only live and travel, but also face many other inconveniences such as when there were parties or when having to repair or rebuild houses.

Mr. Le Van Tien (lane 38 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai) said that cramped, damp, and lack of light are common conditions in alleys like this. Residents here are waiting and hoping for investment resources for the alley, so that people can enjoy the most basic benefits, starting with life amenities.

From the above urgent needs, in recent times, the policy of expanding alleys and lanes to ensure urban infrastructure and traffic safety has been resolutely implemented by Hai Chau district with great support from the people. Thanks to that, a series of alleys and small lanes have been expanded, somewhat changing the face of the city and bringing significant benefits.

Along the newly expanded roads, from the bustling Phan Thanh to the upgraded and expanded rural roads and alleys, the mark of solidarity can be clearly seen. When the people are willing to share, the government listens wholeheartedly, each meter of donated land not only widens the road but also opens up the future for the whole community.

Da Nang today is not only more beautiful and modern, but also a living testament to the spirit of "Party's will, people's heart" - where correct decisions are nurtured by trust and consensus.

And then, every time we walk on the spacious streets and see the bright lights, we understand that behind the urban appearance is a story of silent but proud sacrifices of people who love this city very much.
