(CLO) NATO Secretary General said that the alliance's top priority is to ensure Ukraine is in the strongest possible position before entering into any peace negotiations with Russia.
Speaking at a meeting in Brussels with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed that discussions should focus on increasing military and economic support for Ukraine, rather than speculating about when peace talks would begin.
“It is necessary to do everything possible to support Ukraine with air defense systems and modern weapons. When negotiations take place, Ukraine must be in the best position to reach a favorable agreement,” Mr. Rutte said. He also mentioned the importance of economic support for Ukraine not only during wartime but also when peace is established.

On his Telegram channel, President Zelenskyy said he had discussed with the leaders of the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and representatives of the United Kingdom. He will also attend the EU Summit in Brussels on Thursday.
“This is an important opportunity to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine today and in the future,” Zelensky stressed. While Ukraine sees NATO membership as a long-term security guarantee, the United States, Germany and a number of other countries still oppose the idea as the war with Russia continues.
French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed that supporting Ukraine is his country's "absolute priority". France pledged to continue providing weapons and resources necessary for Ukraine to defend its territory.
Mr. Macron also said that he will maintain close dialogue with Ukraine and international partners to promote a just and sustainable peace.
At NATO headquarters, Mr Rutte stressed that the terms of any talks should be decided by Ukraine, Russia and the parties involved.
