On the afternoon of September 21, at the United Nations Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a friendly atmosphere, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the role and contributions of the Secretary-General and the United Nations to international peace, stability, security, and resolution of hotspots, and affirmed that Vietnam supports and is ready to contribute to those efforts.
The Prime Minister supported the Secretary-General's current priorities, including preparations for the Future Summit scheduled for 2024, the New Agenda for Peace Initiative, the Plan to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and respond to climate change.
The Prime Minister said that Vietnam is actively coordinating with organizations in the United Nations system to carry out many cooperation activities, especially in ensuring international security, participating in UN peacekeeping forces at many hotspots, transforming to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), equitable energy transition, implementing social justice, and leaving no one behind.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by climate change, with natural disasters, droughts, floods, subsidence, landslides, and saltwater intrusion in all three regions of the country, especially in the Mekong Delta.
From there, the Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is committed to taking strong actions towards green transformation, energy transformation that promotes equity and justice, and at the same time, developing countries need to be given priority support in terms of capital, technology, training, and governance.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres conveyed his regards and best wishes to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Vo Van Thuong.
The Secretary-General thanked Vietnam for its excellent cooperation and support for the United Nations in all priority areas of activity, especially peacekeeping, international security, climate change, sustainable development, ensuring human rights, etc., especially its strong commitments to implementing the SDGs, climate action, and equitable energy transition.
In addition, Secretary-General Guterres fully shares Vietnam's views on upholding multilateralism, promoting sustainable development and reforming international financial institutions to support developing countries. The Secretary-General wishes the Government and People of Vietnam success in achieving the goals of peace and prosperity and making important contributions to the world and the United Nations.
Sharing about the regional situation, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Secretary-General Guterres agreed on the need to ensure compliance with international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in the East Sea.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh respectfully invited Secretary-General António Guterres to visit Vietnam again.
