According to a VNA correspondent in New York, this is the first meeting of the UN Women Executive Board in 2025 to discuss improving operational efficiency and orientations for developing the Strategic Plan for the 2026-2029 period. The meeting takes place in the context of the UN preparing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Programme and Platform for Action (1995), the 20th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, and the 15th anniversary of the establishment of UN Women. At the meeting, countries shared the view that despite much progress, the protection of women's rights and gender equality faces many challenges. Women in many parts of the world are facing conflicts, humanitarian crises, are victims of violence, discrimination and are greatly affected by climate change and social injustice, while resources for this area are increasingly difficult, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda is not meeting the set progress.
Speaking at the discussion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that this is an important opportunity for member countries and the UN to assess the progress achieved, draw important lessons, and from there propose effective and timely solutions to challenges, and share some priorities to promote global gender equality. The Ambassador said that in the context of the rapid and pivotal scientific, technological and innovation revolution for human development today, it is necessary to promote the participation and contribution of women in the fields of science, technology and innovation through STEM education programs for girls, and build a global framework to connect women participating in STEM in different regions. It is necessary to allocate resources more effectively to essential areas such as health and education, conduct gender impact assessments, set specific and clear goals, and promote transparency in budget spending to contribute to improving practical effectiveness.
In addition, the Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN emphasized that implementing targeted measures such as regulations on the rate of women's participation, leadership training programs and support policies to ensure work-life balance are essential to create conditions for women to promote their roles and contribute more to policy making and decision making. On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang shared and highlighted the efforts and positive results that Vietnam has achieved in ensuring gender equality, especially the high rate of female National Assembly deputies and female scientists, and the early adoption of the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the 2020-2031 period. Vietnam affirmed its readiness to cooperate with UN Women and members of the Executive Council to contribute to the common efforts of the international community to promote gender equality, accelerate the implementation of the SDGs, so that no one is left behind.
The UN Women Executive Board consists of 41 member countries, elected on the basis of geographical distribution. This is the body responsible for monitoring and guiding the activities of this organization. The UN Women Executive Board plays an important role in promoting policies and programs to achieve gender equality, empower women and girls globally, and support member countries in implementing gender-related sustainable development goals. Vietnam was elected as a member of the UN Women Executive Board for the 2025-2027 term and officially assumed this role from January 1, 2025.
