Kinhtedothi - More than 70 years ago, at Da Ong hill (Trung Gia commune, Soc Son district, Hanoi), the Trung Gia Military Conference was held. This was an event of special significance, contributing to the success of the Geneva Conference on restoring peace in Indochina.

The conference venue is now the Trung Gia Resistance Revolutionary Relic Site, which has been ranked by the Hanoi People's Committee. To this day, the relic site is still preserved, conserved and promoted by the government and people of Soc Son district.

Safe zone for “historic meeting”

According to documents kept at the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Soc Son District Party Committee, in 1951, the main force troops coordinated with the militia and guerrillas to attack and win a resounding victory, destroying Tu Tao outpost, forcing the French army to withdraw from Kho Xanh outpost in Binh An village (Trung Gia commune) to Nui Doi (Tan Minh commune).

By 1952, Trung Gia commune was officially liberated. The French army was only entrenched at Nui Doi and Phu Lo outposts (Soc Son district). Trung Gia was considered a safe and secure place to hold a military conference between the Vietnamese army and the French colonialists.

To prepare well for the Trung Gia Military Conference, in early June 1954, the District Party Committee, Administrative Committee, and Viet Minh Front of Da Phuc District (now Soc Son District) directly went to Trung Gia and Hong Ky communes to work with local leaders and deploy activities to serve the Conference.

The site for building the camp for the Conference was chosen to be located in the South of Xuan Son village (Trung Gia commune), on the large Ong Da hill, stretching about 100 hectares, adjacent to Huong Ninh village and Ap Chua hamlet of Hong Ky commune.

To carry out the construction of the infrastructure, the District Party Committee, the Administrative Committee and the Viet Minh Front of Da Phuc District mobilized about 30 skilled carpenters from Thu Thuy Village, Xuan Thu Commune. Bamboo, reeds and palm leaves were contributed by the communes of Nam Son, Hong Ky, Trung Gia and the whole district of Pho Yen (Thai Nguyen). Thanks to the solidarity and efforts of the people, in a short time, by the end of June 1954, the spacious camp was completed, ready to serve the Conference.

Witnesses of history

We met Colonel Nguyen Van Tue (born in 1933), a soldier of Company 472 of Da Phuc District Military Command (now Soc Son District Military Command). He was also honored to participate in protecting the Trung Gia Military Conference.

For the veteran who is over 90 years old, many memories are gradually fading into oblivion, but the memories of serving at the Conference 70 years ago are still clear in his mind.

Colonel Nguyen Van Tue recalled that on the morning of July 4, 1954, the people of Da Phuc - Kim Anh district gathered early with flags, flowers, and banners stretching for kilometers, lining both sides of the road from Ni Street along National Highway 3 to the entrance to the Conference area to joyfully welcome the delegation of the General Command of the Vietnam People's Army.

At the same time, to the South, a tricycle carrying the French military delegation landed at Luong Chau airport. Soldiers of Company 472 were assigned to welcome the French delegation. The convoy began rolling along the road from Luong Chau airport, around the foot of Doi Mountain (at that time, a large number of French troops were stationed at Doi Mountain), heading to Da Phuc district to reach the conference venue.

Mr. Dong Van Sinh (born in 1930) was a youth volunteer who was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in protecting the Trung Gia Military Conference. He shared that: the Lac Long commune militia and guerrilla force and the commune Youth Union at that time played a core role in carrying out the mission.

“The main army units and local army units coordinated and developed plans to protect the inner and outer perimeters. The militia and guerrillas of Trung Gia commune were assigned to patrol and guard 24/7, propagate and mobilize people in villages and hamlets to ensure good security and order during the conference…” - Mr. Dong Van Sinh recounted.

During the conference, along with the tense atmosphere of negotiations and waiting for news from the Geneva Conference, on the sidelines, thousands of people from the communes regularly stayed outside to listen to propaganda. On three nights, the army and people of Trung Gia commune performed art, danced and sang on the hillside next to Highway 3.

More than 70 years after the historical event, time continues to flow, generations follow one another, witnesses who were soldiers and militiamen in the past such as Mr. Nguyen Van Tue, Mr. Dong Van Sinh, now at a rare age, always feel proud every time they remember the Trung Gia Military Conference.

A "red address" for future generations

Although it only took place for 24 days (from July 4 to July 27, 1954), the Trung Gia Military Conference left a deep mark in the history of the resistance war against France, contributing significantly to the success of the Geneva Conference, opening the door to peace in Indochina after 9 years of protracted resistance.

The people of Soc Son district devoted themselves to serving the conference and fulfilling the tasks assigned by the Party. The patriotism of the cadres, soldiers and people of Soc Son district left an unforgettable impression in the hearts of those attending the conference and in the glorious history of the Vietnam People's Army.

To mark that historical mark, the Party Committee and people of Hanoi in general and Soc Son district in particular have always paid attention to and promoted propaganda and education; at the same time, preserved, conserved and promoted the historical value of the Trung Gia Military Conference and the Trung Gia Resistance Revolutionary Relic Site.

Head of the Department of Education and Training of Soc Son district, Tran Thi Thanh Hue, said that the Trung Gia Military Conference is a proud historical milestone in the difficult but heroic historical journey of the nation. Recognizing the significance and importance of that, the Department of Education and Training of the district has integrated the content of the Trung Gia Military Conference into the local education program from the 2012-2013 school year to the present.

The district's Department of Education and Training has also coordinated with the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of the Soc Son District Party Committee to collect and compile a "Collection of local history lectures of the district", integrating valuable documents on the Trung Gia Military Conference event. From there, helping generations of students in Soc Son district not only acquire historical knowledge but also train and imbue them with the passionate patriotism and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people through vivid historical lessons.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Son District Do Minh Tuan said that with its great values in the history of military diplomacy, the Trung Gia Resistance Revolutionary Relic Site - where the Trung Gia Military Conference was held more than 70 years ago, was ranked by the Hanoi People's Committee in 2002. Over the years, the relic site has been preserved and kept intact by the government and people of Soc Son District.

In order to promote the value of the Trung Gia Military Conference, the Hanoi People's Committee has recently approved about 71 billion VND to implement the investment project to build, restore and upgrade the Trung Gia Resistance Revolutionary Relic Site. Currently, the project is being actively implemented, with the expectation of turning this location into a "red address", a place to educate about the important revolutionary historical traditions of the capital Hanoi.

“The people and armed forces of Da Phuc district in the past and Soc Son district today are honored to be the locality that organized and are proud to participate in protecting, serving and contributing to the success of the Trung Gia Military Conference. The conference and the images of the people who participated and created the success of the conference are always imprinted in the memories and heroic traditions of the army and people of Soc Son district, in the history lessons of generations of students in the district…” - Secretary of Soc Son District Party Committee Bui Duy Cuong .
