Proactively bringing in many types of fruit trees to grow to develop the economy, up to now, households in Bai Vang village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district, Lang Son province have had a good economy, now the whole village has only one poor household.
Boldly change crops
Previously, people in Bai Vang village only cultivated rice, corn, and peanuts, so the family economy faced many difficulties and the poverty rate was high.
But over the past 10 years, thanks to propaganda and mobilization, people have converted the area of some low-value crops and fallow land to grow fruit trees with high economic value.
Along with the propaganda to mobilize people to actively change the crop structure, in recent years, when vocational training classes were organized by Dong Tan commune, Bai Vang village also sent people to actively participate to master the techniques of growing fruit trees.
In addition, socio-political organizations have supported people in accessing preferential loans and supporting the purchase of fertilizers on deferred payment for people's development.
With the support of cement from the State, people have proactively contributed working days and materials to solidify canals, ensuring irrigation water for crops.
With the support of the state, people have proactively built irrigation ditches to take care of fruit gardens in Bai Vang village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district, Lang Son province.
The first family we visited was Mr. Nguyen Van Thang's, who is a household with a large custard apple growing area in Bai Vang village.
Convenient transportation is also an important foundation for Bai Vang village to develop fruit trees.
Mr. Thang said that thanks to the propaganda and mobilization of the government, his family has taken advantage of the land area at the foot of the mountain to plant over 1,000 custard apple trees.
During the planting process, he found that custard apple trees are very strong, drought-resistant, and have few pests and diseases... applying many pruning and pollination techniques, so the custard apple trees have always given high productivity and value. In 2024, his family had an income of 200 million VND from custard apples.
Not only developing the local traditional custard apple tree, many households have promoted the technique of grafting Thai custard apple eyes on custard apple trees to harvest off-season such as Ms. Hoang Thi Binh, Mr. Trieu Van Gioong...
Mrs. Binh happily said that her family has 400 custard apple trees, but because her family does not have much labor, it is very difficult to take care of and harvest them every year.
Therefore, after learning that Thai custard apple trees bear fruit later than Vietnamese custard apple trees, her family boldly grafted Thai custard apple buds onto local Vietnamese custard apple trees.
Up to now, the Thai custard apple tree has grown very well, so in her family's garden, after harvesting custard apples in July and August, Thai custard apples are harvested in November and December, the harvest time is longer, and the selling price is much better.
Taiwanese guava trees are cared for by people of Bai Vang village, wrapped in plastic bags to ensure quality.
Since the conversion of crop structure to growing custard apple and Thai custard apple, the economy of households in Bai Vang village has changed. Small households earn a profit of several tens of millions of dong a year, while large households earn hundreds of millions of dong.
The whole village has only one poor household left.
Not only custard apple and Thai custard apple but other fruit trees are also bringing high economic efficiency to people in Bai Vang village.
Mr. Ly Quoc Huong said that his family still grows rice to ensure food during the year, but in economic development, his family has planted 400 more Taiwanese apple trees.
After nearly 10 years of development, he realized that Taiwanese apple trees are easy to grow, have few pests and diseases, high productivity, stable price... especially Taiwanese apple trees are harvested at the end of the year and the beginning of the lunar new year, when farmers have finished harvesting rice and planting crops, so his family has a very favorable time to harvest Taiwanese apples.
People are excited to harvest Taiwanese apples because this year the harvest is good and the price is good.
As for Mr. Dang Hai Vien's family, since 2015, they have also actively switched to growing grapefruit and apples.
Mr. Vien said that his family currently grows 130 pomelo trees, each crop yields 10,000 fruits, and 300 apple trees. Every year, his family earns about 200 million VND from selling pomelos and apples.
Each season has its own fruits, now coming to Bai Vang village, everyone will enjoy the special fruits made by the hands of the local people: Taiwanese apples, Thai jackfruit, Taiwanese guava, Dien grapefruit, custard apple, Thai custard apple, durian custard apple...
Mr. Nong Van Trung - Secretary of Bai Vang village Party cell excitedly added that currently, in Bai Vang village, there are about 23 hectares of area for growing different types of fruit trees...
The households growing fruit trees are all well off, fruit trees are the main source of income for the people, up to now the average income per capita of the village is 52 million VND/person/year. Currently, Bai Vang village has only one poor household but the head of the household is a disabled person.
More and more modern, spacious houses are being built in Bai Vang village.
It can be seen that the development of diverse fruit trees in Bai Vang village is an important direction, contributing to the transformation of crop structure, improving production efficiency and people's lives.
In the coming time, the Party Committee and the authorities of Bai Vang village will continue to promote propaganda and orientation for people to gradually form concentrated fruit tree production areas, with more cooperatives and cooperatives to make planting and consuming products more convenient.
