Over the past 10 days, the prices of vegetables (green vegetables, tubers, fruits, food) of all kinds in many communes of Can Giuoc district (Long An province) have dropped, losing more than 50% in price. Vegetable garden owners who want to sell their products at harvest time have no outlet, so losses are inevitable.
Unprecedented low prices for clean vegetables?
The owner of a rather grand vegetable garden in Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district, Dang Phuoc Tong could only shake his head sadly.
The family grows green vegetables using high technology. Currently, green mustard and sweet cabbage are ready to be harvested but are difficult to sell on the market.
"Vegetable prices have dropped more than 50% compared to last week. The price of green mustard is only 4,000 VND/kg, but traders came to look but did not buy," said Mr. Tong.
Mr. Tran Phuoc Dao (51 years old, living in Phuoc Hau commune) said: "Honestly, after February, the price of green vegetables was very unstable. Onions, chives, cabbage... just increased for a day and everyone was happy, but then it dropped by half, and it lasted for a whole week and was still the same.
The family lives on a vegetable garden. This type of market only leads to losses due to investment in seeds, water, and labor...".
Not only in Phuoc Hau, many other communes in Can Giuoc such as My Loc, Phuoc Lam, Long Thuong, ... gardeners suffer from unstable vegetable prices when it comes time to sell.

Spontaneous planting, vegetables are difficult to sell
On the morning of March 13, speaking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Vo Tan Khoi, Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Service Center, said that Can Giuoc is one of the localities with the largest area of high-tech vegetables in the province, with more than 1,030 hectares.
Currently, the district has 28 cooperatives, 1 cooperative union and 95 production linkage groups, of which 7/16 vegetable cooperatives are certified to meet VietGAP standards, 3 cooperatives are certified to produce vegetables according to safe chains. The remaining cooperatives all have certificates of food safety and hygiene.
Can Giuoc district is focusing on planning to develop high-tech vegetable growing areas, building traffic infrastructure, irrigation systems, electricity systems, pumping stations...
In the case of Mr. Truong Ngoc Thanh (Phuoc Thuan hamlet, Phuoc Lam commune) he invested capital to grow 3,000m2 of cabbage in a greenhouse and installed an automatic irrigation system.
Cabbage grown in greenhouses has fewer pests and diseases, reduces the number of times pesticides are used, and reduces labor; the productivity and quality of green vegetables are improved. Thanks to the application of high technology in growing, all of his cabbage has been sold out each crop and has high profits.
"The cooperative is responsible for the consumption of members' products. All vegetables that are ready for harvest are sold to supermarkets. The wholesale market in Ho Chi Minh City buys all of them, so gardeners do not have to worry about being forced to lower prices.
However, there are still many farmers who grow vegetables spontaneously and do not register to join cooperatives, so they find their own markets, which is why prices are sometimes unstable," Mr. Khoi shared.
