Since the Lunar New Year, the price of green vegetables has continuously dropped, causing vegetable growers in An Phu commune (Pleiku city, Gia Lai) to "cry".
Currently, the price of many types of vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, water spinach, coriander, green onions... is only 1,000 VND/kg. However, in the gardens in An Phu commune, there are still no traders coming to buy. The price of vegetables falling too low and being difficult to sell has made many farmers frustrated. They leave their fields and gardens alone or destroy the vegetable beds that are still lush. Others only take care of them moderately and wait for the price to increase.
When we visited, Mr. Nguyen Phi Ho (village 7, An Phu Commune) used a lawn mower to destroy the lush green vegetable beds. He said: Now these vegetables are only 1,000 VND/kg but traders are not asking to buy them. The price is too low, not enough to cover the cost of harvesting, transportation and care, so he is forced to destroy tons of vegetables.
According to Mr. Ho's calculation, if vegetable prices do not fall, with 1.7 sao of coriander and watercress, he will earn about 9-10 million VND.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phi Ho (village 7, An Phu commune), many households have uprooted the piles of green bean plants on the side of the road because they do not have enough money to pay for the harvest. Photo: MP
“It’s so sad, but I don’t know what to do now. I’ll destroy everything, let the land rest for a few days, and then replant other vegetables and tubers,” Mr. Ho said.
According to Mr. Ho, after Tet, the prices of most vegetables dropped sharply, causing many people to fall into dire straits. He then led us to a place where people had piled up green beans on the side of the road because they did not have enough money to pay the harvesters.
Not far away, Ms. Le Thi Le (village 7, An Phu commune) was asking her neighbors to weed her newly planted 2.7-acre lettuce garden.
Ms. Le said: She tries to do it only because she regrets the effort and the number of seeds she has planted. If the price of vegetables does not change, then on harvest day, the money from selling vegetables will not be enough to pay for the care. About a month ago, the price of lettuce was stable at 5,000-7,000 VND/kg, but for some reason, after Tet until now, the price has continuously dropped miserably.
"We stay up late and wake up early to take care of the plants, but when it's time to harvest, we don't sell enough to pay for fertilizer and seeds," Ms. Le lamented.
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep - Chairman of the People's Committee of An Phu Commune - informed: The whole commune has about 250 hectares of vegetables. This area is mainly converted from rice fields to vegetable fields. This year, vegetable prices have dropped sharply because the market in the Central provinces is oversupplied, so the demand for imported vegetables from Gia Lai has decreased.
To support vegetable growers, the commune's associations and organizations have mobilized support for part of the production costs and then mobilized people to harvest and transport vegetables and tubers to supply to military units that are performing the task of helping people to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in the area to use as food for daily meals.
