In early February 2025, coffee prices on the world market fluctuated in opposite directions, with Robusta coffee prices falling while Arabica coffee prices increased sharply. Robusta coffee prices fell due to strong selling pressure from Vietnamese growers after the Lunar New Year. Meanwhile, Arabica coffee prices rose to a record high as investors increased their purchases, along with the high increase in the Brazilian currency against the USD, which supported prices.
In 2025, the La Nina phenomenon is expected to replace El Nino, which could affect Brazil’s coffee growing regions. This increases the risk of frost, which could destroy coffee trees and severely impact expected yields.
In the 2025-2026 crop year, the country's coffee output is forecast to fall to a three-year low.
On the London exchange, on February 10, 2025, Robusta coffee futures prices for March 2025 and May 2025 delivery decreased by 3.0% and 2.5% respectively compared to January 31, 2025, down to USD 5,561/ton and USD 5,564/ton.
On the New York Stock Exchange, on February 10, 2025, the price of Arabica coffee futures for delivery in March 2025 and May 2025 increased by 8.3% and 7.8% respectively compared to January 31, 2025, to 404.35 Uscent/lb; 396.7 Uscent/lb.
On Brazil's BMF exchange, on February 10, 2025, the price of Arabica coffee futures for delivery in March 2025 and May 2025 increased by 10.4% and 9.9% respectively compared to January 31, 2025, to 505.25 Uscent/lb and 500.0 Uscent/lb.
Domestically, the harvest has successfully ended in many localities. In early February 2025, Robusta coffee prices in the domestic market increased slightly compared to the end of January 2025. Coffee prices on February 10, 2025 increased by VND 200/kg compared to January 31, 2025, ranging from VND 128,000 - VND 129,000/kg (depending on the surveyed area).
Currently, the average coffee consumption per capita in Vietnam is only about 2.2 kg/person/year, much lower than the global average of 5.5 kg/person/year. Meanwhile, Vietnam still maintains its position as the second largest coffee exporter in the world. The reason for the low domestic consumption is that coffee is not the main drink of the Vietnamese people during the day, mainly used to stay awake rather than to enjoy. In addition, the market for cheap instant coffee is dominant, while high-quality coffee and the culture of enjoying specialty coffee have not really developed strongly.
According to Mr. Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, the goal by 2030 is to increase domestic coffee consumption to 3 kg/person/year, equivalent to 300,000 tons of coffee, accounting for 18% of total output, estimated at 1.6 million tons. Vietnam's domestic market still has a lot of potential for development, it is forecasted that in the period of 2025 - 2030, domestic coffee consumption will grow by an average of 6.6%/year.
