Reuters reported on April 10 that US President Joe Biden received Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio at the White House, in the context that the two sides want to demonstrate a strong and growing partnership, focusing on joint defense cooperation.
The summit began with a formal welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, before the two sides held closed-door talks and a joint press conference in the Rose Garden.
"I affirm that our alliance has never been stronger in our entire history," President Biden said as the two sides began talks in the Oval Office.
The White House boss welcomed the Japanese Prime Minister's quick opposition to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, and improved relations with South Korea.
“Our relationship is truly a global partnership. For that, Prime Minister Kishida, I thank you. Now our two countries are building a stronger defense partnership and a stronger Indo-Pacific region than ever before,” President Biden said.
For his part, Prime Minister Kishida said that the cherry trees near the White House are "a symbol of friendship between Japan and the United States".
"As a global partner, Japan will join hands with our American friends and together take the lead in addressing challenges in the Indo-Pacific and the world," said Prime Minister Kishida.
On April 11, Prime Minister Kishida will speak before the US Congress and join President Biden and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a trilateral meeting.
The United States and Japan have signed about 70 agreements on defense cooperation, including upgrading U.S. military command facilities in Japan to better coordinate with Japanese forces in the event of a crisis.
A senior government official said Japan was now a “full global partner” with the United States, with influence extending far beyond its region to Europe and the Middle East.
According to The Hill , the two leaders are expected to hold a joint press conference on the afternoon of April 10 (local time) and announce measures to further promote the joint development of military and defense equipment.
In addition, the two sides plan to announce a joint mission to explore the moon and projects to work together on artificial intelligence (AI) research, according to US officials.
