Father donates kidney to revive daughter's life

After nearly a year of traveling from Tay Ninh to Ho Chi Minh City to treat end-stage chronic kidney failure, Ms. NTHG's (28 years old) health still did not improve. Because of this disease, she could not even keep the fetus at 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Heartbroken by his daughter's pain, Mr. NVC (Ms. G.'s father) decided to donate a kidney to save his daughter.

Previously, since 2019, Ms. G. began to see symptoms of swelling in her body, blurred vision, and frequent fatigue. Her family took her to Ho Chi Minh City for examination and found out that she had nephrotic syndrome. Although she was instructed to receive treatment, partly because of the long distance, partly because of her subjectivity, thinking that she was still young and the disease would gradually go away, she voluntarily gave up treatment.

In 2023, feeling her health was stable, she got married and became pregnant. However, the happiness of being a mother did not last long as her health deteriorated. Her body was swollen, her eyes were blurred, she could not see clearly, she could not urinate, could not eat, and she felt tired. In April 2024, she received bad news when she could not keep the 24-week-old fetus. Nephrotic syndrome, due to not being thoroughly treated, progressed to end-stage renal failure, forcing Ms. G. to undergo regular dialysis.

For nearly a year, regardless of the weather, Ms. G. from Tay Ninh went to Xuyen A Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for regular kidney dialysis three times a week. Unable to bear seeing his daughter suffer from the pain of illness, Mr. C. decided to donate a kidney to her.

Doctors during surgery

7 hours of laparoscopic kidney transplant surgery

On February 20, after many major and minor examinations, the laparoscopic kidney transplant surgery from a father to his daughter was performed by doctors from the Department of Urology, Xuyen A General Hospital in collaboration with doctors from Cho Ray Hospital.

After 7 hours of surgery, the laparoscopic kidney transplant surgery using specialized techniques was successfully completed with the efforts of dozens of doctors and nurses in the team. Immediately after the kidney was transplanted, the patient's kidney function was restored, and the patient was able to urinate right on the operating table. Two days after the important surgery, both the donor and the recipient were in stable health. Ms. G's kidney function returned to normal, she was no longer tired, and she was able to eat and live normally.

On March 11, Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Vu Le Anh, Head of the Department of Nephrology, Xuyen A General Hospital, said that the female patient was too young, the patient had suffered from nephrotic syndrome for many years without adequate treatment, along with a miscarriage, so the patient's health gradually weakened, causing kidney failure. But the good news is that after surgery, kidney function reached a stable level. After surgery, the patient was treated with anti-rejection drugs and scheduled for regular check-ups.

"People with kidney failure, if treated early and well controlled, can be completely cured, without the need for dialysis, and without worrying about kidney failure. Therefore, when people discover that their bodies have signs of kidney failure such as swelling, poor urination, poor appetite, and frequent fatigue, they should seek treatment immediately, and not despair," Dr. Le Anh advised.
