Within the framework of the state visit to the Republic of Indonesia, the official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat by General Secretary To Lam and his wife and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, on the afternoon of March 10, in Jakarta, General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense, had a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Minister of National Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

General Phan Van Giang expressed his delight at the comprehensive, trustworthy and substantive development of the Vietnam- Indonesia relationship since the two countries established diplomatic relations 70 years ago. In particular, the upgrading of the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the visit of General Secretary To Lam and his wife is a historic milestone in the relationship between the two countries; demonstrating the political determination of both sides in making the cooperative relationship increasingly trustworthy, substantive and effective, in which defense and security cooperation is one of the important pillars.

Sharing with the Government and people of Indonesia the heavy losses caused by the recent severe floods, General Phan Van Giang highly appreciated the leadership of the Government and the pioneering role of the Ministry of National Defense and the Indonesian National Army in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, promptly bringing people's lives back to normal.

General Phan Van Giang congratulated and highly appreciated Indonesia's great achievements in economy and society as well as its position and role in the international and regional arena; believed that Indonesia would continue to develop prosperously, have an increasingly high position in the international arena, and successfully implement the "Indonesia Vision 2045" with the goal of becoming a developed country on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding (1945 - 2045); at the same time, highly appreciated Indonesia's foreign policy and contributions in promoting the central role and solidarity of ASEAN.

General Phan Van Giang affirmed his support for Indonesia's initiatives within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM+), especially the Concept Paper on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific from a defense perspective; and support for Indonesia in its role as co-chair of the ADMM+ Expert Group on Military Medicine with the United States for the 2024-2027 period.

General Phan Van Giang had a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

Also at the meeting, General Phan Van Giang expressed his satisfaction with the results of bilateral defense cooperation, especially after the official visit to Vietnam by Mr. Prabowo Subianto (now the current President of Indonesia) in 2022, highlighting the following areas: Exchange of delegations at all levels, effective maintenance of consultation, dialogue, and training cooperation mechanisms; cooperation between military branches and services; cooperation in defense industry and military trade; coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and mechanisms.

General Phan Van Giang also appreciated Indonesia's sending of both naval and coast guard ships to visit Vietnam in 2024; thanked Indonesia for supporting Vietnam's initiative to establish the ASEAN Intelligence Community and sending a delegation to attend the 80th Anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army, the 35th Anniversary of National Defense Day and the 2nd Vietnam International Defense Exhibition.

The two ministers exchanged souvenirs.

Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin expressed his pleasure to meet General Phan Van Giang and highly appreciated the development of Vietnam-Indonesia defense cooperation in recent times; thanked Vietnam for sending naval ships to participate in the Komodo 2025 Multilateral Naval Exercise in Indonesia, contributing to the overall success of the Exercise; and suggested that the two countries' Defense Ministries study expanding cooperation in potential areas.

The two sides hope to continue to have specific and substantive cooperation contents within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership that the two countries' senior leaders identified during this visit, focusing on the following areas: Exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones; effectively maintaining the Defense Policy Dialogue mechanism; exchanging information and situations; enhancing cooperation between armies and services and cooperation between law enforcement forces at sea; training human resources; defense industry cooperation, etc.

In addition, General Phan Van Giang hoped that the maritime law enforcement forces of the two countries would increase exchanges, cooperation, information sharing, and situation sharing, and effectively coordinate to respond to issues arising at sea; continue to coordinate in humane treatment of cases of fishermen from each country violating each other's waters; the two navies would soon complete negotiations and sign an Agreement on joint patrols and establish a communication channel; and at the same time, he asked Indonesia to support Vietnam's efforts to remove the European Commission's (EC) "yellow card" on Vietnamese seafood.

On this occasion, General Phan Van Giang respectfully invited Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin to pay an official visit to Vietnam and said that the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense supports and will send a delegation to attend the Indonesian Defense Exhibition in June 2025.
