Promoting cultural, sports and tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Sri Lanka

(Fatherland) - On the morning of March 5 in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong had a meeting and worked with Sri Lankan Ambassador to Vietnam Poshitha Perera.


Welcoming Ambassador Poshitha Perera and his delegation to visit and work at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970, over the past 55 years, the two countries have always strived to maintain good relations and continuously promote cooperation in various fields, including culture, sports and tourism.

During the Ambassador's term, the Deputy Minister believes that the Ambassador will lay a solid foundation for the cultural, sports and tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

Promoting the achieved results, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong hopes that in the coming time, Vietnam - Sri Lanka will strengthen comprehensive cooperation in all three areas. Cooperation must be through the development of specific action plans and at the same time achieve clear results.

The Deputy Minister proposed that the two sides should strengthen research and sign cooperation documents; coordinate and promote culture in different localities through exchanges of artist groups, festivals, photo exhibitions, film weeks, cultural and artistic activities; support each other to soon implement projects to open cultural centers in each country...

“In particular, cooperation events, through culture, promoting people-to-people exchanges need to be enhanced by the two countries on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. The activities must have a focus and key points and create a deep impression on the people of the two countries,” said Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong.

In addition, cultural exchange activities, besides enhancing understanding between the people of the two countries, also effectively contribute to promoting the cultural and tourism images of both Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

The Deputy Minister stated that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will create favorable conditions to welcome Sri Lankan delegations to Vietnam to attend cultural events such as the Hanoi International Film Festival, the International Dance Festival, and the Hue Festival.

Regarding sports, the Deputy Minister commented that the cooperation in sports between Vietnam and Sri Lanka so far has mainly been through the exchange of referees, coaches, and athletes participating in international sports tournaments and major sports events.

The Deputy Minister hopes that the two countries can strengthen sports cooperation in the spirit of mutual development; organize activities to promote and train traditional Vietnamese martial arts in Sri Lanka...

The Deputy Minister also assessed that Sri Lanka is a very potential market for resort, experience, culinary and spiritual tourism, especially cooperation in Buddhism. In the coming time, Vietnam and Sri Lanka need to increase delegation exchanges, share experiences, explore cooperation opportunities, and update information on tourism development.

At the same time, Vietnam hopes that Sri Lanka will increase its participation in Vietnam's tourism promotion activities such as the Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) in Hanoi and the International Travel Mart (ITE) in Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking at the reception, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Vietnam Poshitha Perera sincerely thanked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong for the warm and friendly reception for the delegation.

The Sri Lankan Ambassador shared that over the past time, cooperation between Sri Lanka and Vietnam has achieved certain results; in which the most prominent is the field of culture, sports and tourism.

Agreeing with the discussions of Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, the Ambassador said that the room for cooperation in culture, sports and tourism between the two countries is very large.

The Ambassador hopes that in the coming time, the two sides will increase information exchange, study cooperation plans on culture, sports and tourism; especially concretize cooperation documents into specific plans and actions; create momentum to promote and develop the friendly relationship between Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

In addition, the Ambassador hopes that Vietnam and Sri Lanka will coordinate to organize many cultural and artistic activities such as exhibitions, art performances... to promote the image of the country, culture and people of each country to domestic and international friends.

Agreeing with the view that tourism cooperation between the two countries still has much potential, the Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam's culture, people and destinations are quite famous in Sri Lanka. Besides, Sri Lanka is an ideal destination in terms of nature, culture, Buddhism, heritage and cuisine, which is very attractive but has not been explored much by the Vietnamese people. Therefore, the two sides need to pay more attention to supporting each other in promoting tourism.

In the current situation, the Ambassador stated that the two countries have many advantages in terms of natural resources, rich indigenous culture, etc., which help develop tourism. What needs to be done now is to soon open a direct flight between Vietnam and Sri Lanka to attract tourists to each country.

Sri Lanka hopes that with efforts to promote two-way tourism, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Sri Lanka will increase and vice versa.

Regarding sports, the Ambassador expressed his impression of the achievements of Vietnamese sports in both regional and international arenas.

Sri Lanka hopes that the two countries will study cooperation in the field of sports, especially traditional martial arts; and increase exchanges of delegations of officials, coaches, athletes, and referees in key sports.

At the end of the meeting, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong and Ambassador Poshitha Perera agreed that both countries have unique and rich cultures, and the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Sri Lankan Embassy is to further strengthen cultural, sports and tourism cooperation activities, helping the people of the two countries to better understand the friendly and comprehensive cooperative relationship between the two countries and to better understand the culture, sports and tourism of each country./.
