The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has just issued a statement saying that, at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife will attend the Special Summit to celebrate 50 years of ASEAN-Australia relations, pay an official visit to Australia and an official visit to New Zealand from March 5-11.
The Special Summit to celebrate 50 years of ASEAN-Australia relations was held in Melbourne, Australia from March 5-6 with the participation of leaders of ASEAN countries, Australia and the ASEAN Secretary-General. The Prime Minister of Timor Leste was invited to attend this summit as an observer.
The conference, themed “Partnership for the Future”, is being held in the context of dynamic cooperation between ASEAN and Australia in many areas. This is an opportunity for the two sides to review the past 50 years of relations and discuss measures to promote substantive and effective development of relations, in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2021.
Within the framework of the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend key meetings and have a number of other important foreign affairs activities.
Regarding Vietnam-Australia relations , the two countries established a Comprehensive Partnership in 2009, an enhanced Comprehensive Partnership in 2015, and upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in March 2018.
Bilateral trade turnover in 2023 will reach 13.8 billion USD, of which exports will reach 5.2 billion USD and imports will reach 8.5 billion USD. Currently, Australia is Vietnam's 7th largest trading partner and Vietnam is Australia's 10th largest partner.
Australia is one of the countries that actively supports Vietnam in the prevention and control of the Covid-19 epidemic.
The two sides have cooperated well in the fields of security and defense through delegation exchanges, signing cooperation agreements, cooperation in crime prevention, immigration management, combating illegal immigration, information exchange, experience, English training, etc.
Australia is one of the largest bilateral partners providing non-refundable ODA to Vietnam. There are currently about 31,000 Vietnamese students and postgraduates studying in Australia. Cooperation between the two countries’ localities is developing well, with 15 pairs of twin localities.
The Vietnamese community in Australia has about 350,000 people (ranked 5th among the ethnic communities of foreign origin in Australia). Vietnamese people are present in most states.
Regarding Vietnam-New Zealand relations , the two countries established diplomatic relations on June 19, 1975, established a Comprehensive Partnership (September 2009), and upgraded the relationship to a Strategic Partnership in July 2020.
Vietnam is New Zealand's 14th largest trading partner, of which Vietnam is the 13th largest exporter to the New Zealand market and the 17th largest importer of New Zealand.
Two-way trade turnover has increased steadily over the years. As of November 2023, New Zealand had 52 investment projects with a total capital of 208.35 million USD, ranking 39th out of 143 countries and territories with foreign direct investment in Vietnam.
New Zealand provides Vietnam with a stable source of ODA that increases every year.
The Vietnamese community in New Zealand has about 11,000 people, mainly living in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. The majority of overseas Vietnamese have stable lives and a spirit of turning towards their homeland.
