Liver enzymes 8 times higher due to drug allergy

NDO - After taking 5 types of drugs to treat lower limb venous insufficiency, the patient had an allergic reaction to the drug, causing a rash all over the body and liver enzymes to increase 8 times.

Patient NTC (67 years old, Hanoi) was taken to the doctor by her family because of knee pain. After examination, she was diagnosed with lower limb venous insufficiency and was prescribed 5 types of medication, including venous circulation support medication, calcium, vitamin C, multivitamins, and cholesterol-lowering medication. She did not use any other traditional or oriental medicine during the treatment.

Just two days after starting the medication, she developed a rash all over her body. At first, the itching was mild, but then it spread from her legs to her face, accompanied by a severe itching sensation. When she returned to the medical facility for a check-up, she was prescribed additional washes and anti-allergy medication, but the symptoms did not improve.

A day after taking anti-allergy medication, she continued to have a high fever of 39-40 degrees Celsius. Despite taking anti-pyretics, her temperature did not go down and relapsed after a few hours. Her family was forced to take her to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.

At the hospital, the patient was admitted and treated by the Internal Medicine Department. She continued to have a fever for 3 days, along with severe allergic symptoms such as a rash all over her body, thickened skin, severe itching, and swelling of her face, lips, abdomen, legs, and back, causing her face to swell to the point of deformity. The burning, itching symptoms seriously affected her daily activities, eating, and movement.

What is worrying is that the patient's liver enzymes suddenly increased, 8 times higher than normal (due to continuous use of fever-reducing drugs for 4 days (5 hours/time), which also increased the burden on the liver, contributing to the increase in liver enzymes). She was diagnosed with a drug allergy.

Dr. Tran Hai Ninh, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, warned that severe drug allergies can cause dangerous complications such as anaphylactic shock, laryngeal edema, airway spasm, systemic edema... and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

"In this patient's case, if not treated promptly and properly, prolonged high liver enzymes can lead to acute liver failure, seriously affecting many other organs in the body," said Dr. Ninh.

Currently, the patient is receiving active treatment to control allergies and support the liver. The prognosis for recovery is quite positive.

Doctor Ninh recommends that patients should never be subjective when using drugs, even if they have been prescribed by medical facilities. It is necessary to closely monitor the body's response after starting treatment.

If there are any unusual signs such as rash, fever, difficulty breathing, swelling, you need to go to a medical facility immediately for timely treatment. Absolutely do not arbitrarily prolong the use of antipyretics, do not adjust the dosage without a doctor's instructions.

At the same time, always keep prescriptions and medications used to provide to the doctor in case of complications, helping to determine the cause and have appropriate treatment measures.
