GĐXH - After 2 days of using the medicine, Ms. C. developed symptoms of itching all over her body. Initially, the itching was mild and then spread from her legs to her face, accompanied by a feeling of intense itching.

On March 13, information from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that recently, doctors at this unit received and treated a patient with a severe drug allergy.

Accordingly, Ms. NTC (67 years old, living in Hanoi) was taken to the doctor by her family because of knee pain. After examination, she was diagnosed with lower limb venous insufficiency and was prescribed 5 types of medicine, including venous circulation support medicine, calcium, vitamin C, multivitamins and cholesterol-lowering medicine. She did not use any other traditional or oriental medicine during the treatment.

However, after 2 days of using the medicine, she developed symptoms of itching all over her body. Initially, the itching was mild, but then spread from her legs to her face, accompanied by a feeling of intense itching. When she returned to the medical facility for a re-examination, she was prescribed additional wash and anti-allergy medication, but the symptoms did not improve.

A day after taking anti-allergy medication, she continued to have a high fever of 39–40°C. Despite taking antipyretics, her temperature did not go down and relapsed after a few hours. Her family was forced to take her to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.

Here, she continued to have a fever for 3 days, along with severe allergic symptoms such as a rash all over her body, thickened skin, severe itching, and swelling of her face, lips, abdomen, legs, and back, causing her face to swell to the point of deformity.

The symptoms of burning pain and itching seriously affected her daily life, eating and moving. What was worrying was that the patient's liver enzymes suddenly increased, 8 times higher than normal (due to continuous use of fever-reducing drugs for 4 days (5 hours/time), which also increased the burden on the liver, contributing to the increase in liver enzymes). She was diagnosed with drug allergy.

Dr. Tran Hai Ninh, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that severe drug allergies can cause dangerous complications such as anaphylactic shock, laryngeal edema, airway spasm, systemic edema... and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

" In this patient's case, if not treated promptly and properly, prolonged high liver enzymes can lead to acute liver failure, seriously affecting many other organs in the body, " said Dr. Ninh.

Currently, the patient is receiving active treatment to control allergies and support the liver. The prognosis for recovery is quite positive.

From this case, experts recommend that patients should not be subjective when using drugs, even if the drugs have been prescribed by medical facilities. It is necessary to closely monitor the body's reaction after starting treatment. If there are any unusual signs such as rash, fever, difficulty breathing, swelling, it is necessary to go to a medical facility immediately for timely treatment.

Never arbitrarily prolong the use of fever-reducing drugs or adjust the dosage without a doctor's instructions. At the same time, always keep the prescription and the drugs used to provide to the doctor in case of complications, to help determine the cause and have appropriate treatment measures.
