The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) saying that mango imports (HS 08045020) of Korea in the first 9 months of 2023 reached 23.6 thousand tons, worth 95 million USD, up 14.7% in volume and 8.4% in value over the same period in 2022.

The average imported mango price in the first 9 months of 2023 reached 4,026.7 USD/ton, down 5.4% over the same period in 2022.
Thailand and Peru were the two main markets supplying mangoes to Korea in the first 9 months of 2023, accounting for 80.3% of total imports.
In particular, the leading market is the Thai market with 13 thousand tons, worth 38.7 million USD, up 30.1% in volume and 17.1% in value over the same period in 2022; followed by the Peruvian market with 5.9 thousand tons, worth 31.5 million USD, down 16.1% in volume and down 16.3% in value.
Vietnam is the third largest mango supplier to Korea, however, imports from Vietnam only accounted for 7.3% of Korea's total mango imports in the first 9 months of 2023, reaching 1.7 thousand tons, worth 7.2 million USD, up 19.6% in volume and 18.1% in value over the same period in 2022.

Mangoes are considered to have export potential to demanding markets, contributing to the development of Vietnam's agricultural sector. However, in the Korean market, Vietnamese mangoes still account for a small proportion, so there is still much room to boost exports of this product to Korea in the near future.
According to freshplaza.com, South Korea is increasingly shifting its focus to tropical fruits. Seasonal fruits in South Korea will change dramatically in the coming decades, as warmer temperatures will gradually reduce the cultivation area for popular fruit crops here.
Apples, grapes and pears may gradually decline in the Korean market, while tropical fruits such as mangoes and passion fruit will gain increasing importance in this market.
