“I am delighted to talk to you today about a unique and exciting opportunity: the prospect of Vietnam becoming a leading destination for US film productions,” said Deputy Minister Ho An Phong.
Deputy Minister Ho An Phong spoke.
In an era where storytelling is gaining global popularity, collaboration between Vietnamese and American studios offers limitless potential. In addition, Vietnam’s rich and diverse landscapes provide a wonderful backdrop for filmmakers.
From lush jungles and stunning coastlines to vibrant cities rich in culture and history, Vietnam has a quality cinematic setting that is both captivating and unique.
"Imagine your film set in the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, the ancient charm of Hoi An or the modern energy of Ho Chi Minh City. We offer a variety of settings that can bring your story to life. But it's not just about scenery, our country is home to a talented and growing creative team in the film industry," the Deputy Minister emphasized.
Vietnam now has professionals ready to collaborate on international film productions, offering expertise in everything from production design to post-production. Vietnam’s affordable prices and supportive infrastructure make it a cost-effective yet high-quality location for film projects.
"We are working to simplify film permits, provide tax incentives and provide necessary support to ensure filmmakers' experience here is seamless and successful," said Deputy Minister Hu Anfeng.
Vietnam is not only a great filming location, but also a unique culture and always eager to share its story with the world. Cinema will be a great channel to help promote Vietnam to the world and promote tourism development.
The event attracted more than 500 guests from the United States.
During the live discussion at the Workshop, the speakers, who are filmmakers who have produced works in Vietnam, all shared the same opinion about their extremely favorable and successful filmmaking experiences in Vietnam. At the same time, they affirmed that Vietnam has a lot of potential for film development and has a very strong competitive position in the region.
Commenting that Vietnam's economy is developing very quickly, there will be many conditions for cinema and tourism to develop in the coming time, however, the director of the film "The Quiet American" Phillip Noyce also emphasized the need for policies to support film crews. At the same time, training professional film human resources, creating an open film production environment, and improving the competitiveness of cinema and tourism with countries in the region.
Mr. Phillip Noyce shared: "When making the film "The Quiet American" more than 20 years ago, I did not encounter any obstacles and received great support from local authorities, central and local professional agencies of Vietnam, and enthusiastic participation from the people. The film crew was given maximum conditions from quick licensing to logistics such as: providing security support teams, ensuring the filming scenes went smoothly. These are memories I will never forget".
Many American filmmakers want to come to Vietnam.
Mr. Nicholas Simon, General Director of Indochina Productions, said that Vietnam has a lot of potential to become a film studio, many places can be used as backdrops for filming scenes such as: Ha Long, Hoi An, Hanoi. There are even many very special places that have never appeared in a film. Vietnamese people are very hospitable, the working environment is pleasant. The agreements signed between filmmakers and localities, associations, tourism and aviation businesses today will open up new opportunities and increase the competitiveness of Vietnamese tourism and cinema in the region.
To promote the development of cinema and attract filmmakers, according to Mr. Simon, first of all, the Cinema Law must create preferential policies to make Vietnam an attractive destination. From there, reduce costs for filmmakers, the readiness of the Government, create an open corridor, easy licensing, and reduce administrative procedures.
Mr. Nicholas Simon, General Director of Indochina Productions, interviewed by Vietnam Television
According to Mr. Nicholas Simon, every year there are many advertising programs of Hollywood and brands in Vietnam. And these programs also contribute strongly to tourism development.
"Ninh Binh is a typical example of the impact of cinema on tourism, contributing to the development of tourism in Vietnam. White Lotus is a famous program in the United States. If programs like White Lotus come to Vietnam, it will create a big buzz," said Mr. Nicholas Simon.
Producer of the film "A Traveler's Love Journey" Joel Rice shared, I had a very interesting filming experience when making this film in Vietnam. Everywhere I went, everything I filmed was very supportive. That filmmaking journey left a great impression. Vietnam is a very beautiful country.
However, there is not much information about Vietnam as a destination for filmmakers. Meanwhile, there are many filmmakers who want to come to Vietnam to shoot. I think that Vietnam should consider reducing taxes for foreign filmmakers and creating more promotion programs like this to attract filmmakers, creating wide access to international filmmakers.
Many Vietnamese directors in the United States said they were very proud to attend this program, proud of the two words "Vietnam". More than 500 guests who are filmmakers, film lovers, and tourism businesses came here and all attended until the last minute. That is proof of the success of the Program to promote Vietnamese tourism and cinema in the United States today.
