In the 2025 enrollment season, along with using high school graduation exam results, many higher education institutions will continue to maintain their own exams and use the results of their own exams for enrollment.

According to recommendations from education experts, candidates need to carefully research which methods universities use and how many quotas they have to make appropriate decisions.

The thinking assessment test organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology in January officially kicked off separate exams for university admission in 2025. This exam attracted nearly 14,000 candidates. And right in the first days of February, Hanoi University of Science and Technology continued to open the registration portal for the second round of thinking assessment test (from February 1 to 6). It is expected that about 20,000 candidates will register for this round. Candidates in the second round will take the exam on March 8 to 9 in 13 provinces and cities.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duy Hai - Head of Admissions and Career Guidance Department (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) said that normally, the later the exam sessions, the more candidates register. Correspondingly, the number of candidates for the third round, the school expects about 25,000 students. The school also has a backup plan for overload. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duy Hai, the summary from the first round of exams just passed, the score distribution shows similarities with previous thinking assessment rounds of Hanoi University of Science and Technology in terms of standard score distribution, the median score is stable (about 53 - 54 points). Thus, candidates studying under the new or old high school program still take the same thinking assessment test.

According to statistics, in addition to the University of Science and Technology, there are 6 other separate exams for university admission in 2025. Including: Hanoi National University's capacity assessment exam, consisting of 6 rounds, starting from March. This is one of the largest separate exams in the country. About 90 universities use this exam score for admission; Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam. This exam is the largest in the country, with nearly 107,000 candidates participating in 2024. More than 100 universities use this result for admission. In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City National University will continue to organize the exam with two rounds scheduled on March 30 and June 1 in 25 provinces and cities; Hanoi National University of Education's capacity assessment exam will take place on May 17-18. There are 22 universities that plan to use the Hanoi National University of Education's competency assessment test scores for admission in 2025, an increase of 13 schools compared to 2024; Ho Chi Minh City University of Education's specialized competency assessment test. In the last admission season, 6 pedagogical universities used the exam results for admission, including: Hanoi National University of Education, Hanoi National University of Education 2, pedagogical universities under Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University and Vinh University.

In addition, from 2025, the Ministry of National Defense will organize a separate assessment exam to use the admission results for military schools. Candidates will take the exam on a computer. The exam will include comprehensive knowledge of Math, Literature, English, and a combination of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Candidates will use the exam results to apply to military schools and academies with a quota of about 30% of the total enrollment quota. In addition, schools in the Public Security sector will also organize a specialized assessment exam and use the results of this exam for admission consideration. The Ministry of Public Security's assessment exam includes both multiple-choice and essay tests.

Participating in separate exams helps candidates increase their chances of entering university and reduce pressure in the high school graduation exam, so they are of interest to students. However, candidates need to pay attention to new points when participating in separate exams to ensure effectiveness and avoid waste. According to Ms. Phuong Ha - a teacher at Vietnam - Poland High School (Hanoi), to meet the requirements of separate exams, students need to study more. Meanwhile, the separate exams all take place in the second semester, the final stage of the review plan to prepare for the high school graduation exam. If too much attention is paid to the separate exams, it will lead to subjectivity and neglect of the high school graduation exam. Moreover, candidates need to clearly understand the meaning of each exam to choose and decide to register to participate in order to ensure the highest efficiency and avoid the disadvantages outweighing the benefits. Even if they are admitted to the separate exam, students still need to pass the high school graduation exam.

Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) recommends that candidates should not participate in too many separate exams. The admission quota ratio from separate exams in each school is also different, candidates need to research carefully before deciding to register to avoid waste and inefficiency. This is the final stage, candidates need to focus highly on the high school graduation exam, if they do not meet the graduation requirements, they will also lose the opportunity to participate in the university entrance exam.
