Over the past 30 years, Thailand has hosted three major sporting events: the 18th SEA Games in Chiang Mai (1995), the 8th Asian Games in Bangkok (1998) and the 24th SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima (2007). The country's achievements in many sports have reached world-class levels. Meanwhile, the organization of sporting events has also become a major industry in the Land of the Golden Pagoda.

Vice President of the SEA Games Sports Federation Dato Seri Chaiyapak Siriwak affirmed that the 33rd SEA Games will be organized according to international standards. The competition program will include most of the sports in the Olympic and ASIAD systems. The SEA Games will move towards minimizing the not-so-popular sports that the host countries include in the competition content of the games to divide the overall ranking. The increase in official competitions is aimed at raising the level of the SEA Games, so that countries can aim for major continental and world arenas.

The number of sports and the division of venues for the events will be discussed specifically by the host country Thailand with the SEA Games Sports Federation in the coming time, in consultation with the Olympic Committees of 10 countries in the region before the official announcement.
