Having nipple discharge, feeling a hard lump in her breast, and having a sister who passed away from breast cancer, Ms. PMH (53 years old, Quang Ngai) visited many medical facilities in and outside the province. However, after more than a month, no diagnosis has made her feel truly secure.
At the launching ceremony of the 2022 Breast Cancer Screening and Communication Campaign, Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen emphasized: "There are still many women who come to the hospital for examination at a late stage, making treatment difficult and ineffective."
One of the typical examples for the statement of Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen is the case of Ms. PMH (53 years old, Quang Ngai). She had nipple discharge, felt a hard lump in her breast, and had a family history of a sister who died of breast cancer, but after more than 1 month of examination at many medical facilities in and outside the province, Ms. PMH still had not been diagnosed with the disease.
While she was very worried, Ms. PMH was introduced by an acquaintance to visit Thien Nhan Quang Ngai for a breast examination during the opening week of Thien Nhan Quang Ngai with the hope of finding the right disease.
Through clinical examination, Dr. Vo Thi Diem, Department of Obstetrics, Thien Nhan Hospital, said that Ms. H. had a tumor in her left breast, which was hard to the touch, painful and had red discharge. This case lasted for a long time and caused more pain when Ms. H. was active. Dr. Diem suspected breast cancer and ordered Ms. H. to undergo diagnostic imaging to get the most accurate results.
The ultrasound image showed that Ms. H.'s left breast had a lesion of nearly 2cm without mass, unclear boundaries, and it was very difficult to detect the lesion if the doctor did not have experience with breast ultrasound. After that, Ms. H. was advised to have a breast MRI with contrast injection on the most modern 3.0 Tesla Lumina Siemens (Germany) MRI machine in the Central Highlands.

Breast MRI results clearly showed a non-massive lesion in the upper outer quadrant with strong enhancement (Birads 5) highly suspicious of malignancy. Based on MRI images, combined with ultrasound comparison, the patient underwent core biopsy under ultrasound, which was finally recorded as ductal carcinoma in situ.

"For women aged 40 and over, especially women entering pre-menopause and menopause, breast cancer screening is very important because the risk of breast cancer at this age begins to increase gradually. Regular check-ups, combined with ultrasound and mammography are the best methods for early breast cancer screening.
Breast cancer patients diagnosed at an early stage will have good results both in terms of pathology and aesthetics, prolonging life, and the cost of treatment is also lower than in the late stage," Dr. Vo Thi Diem advised.
At the launching ceremony of the 2022 Breast Cancer Screening and Communication Campaign, Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen also recommended: “Early breast cancer screening is of particular importance. If detected early, the cure rate can be up to 90%, along with the cost and effectiveness of treatment being much more favorable!”
