Cancer patients can choose running to improve their health, but it needs to be appropriate for their condition. Experts from K Hospital give specific advice as follows.
"Cancer patients can run to improve their health, but it needs to be appropriate for their condition. Each type of disease has a different exercise regimen," said Professor, Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital (Hanoi), at the "Relay Journey" race to raise funds to support cancer patients in difficult circumstances, held yesterday morning (December 8) in Hanoi.
WHEN TO WALK, WHEN TO RUN?
Regarding the appropriate way to run, Dr. Quang gave an example: patients who have had lung surgery due to lung tumors have weak lungs and should only walk. When they are in good health, they can run at a slow pace. With other types of cancer, patients can still run or exercise, as long as it is suitable for their physical condition; there is energy consumption and sweating, which will help eliminate toxins.
I myself have been running for about 5 years now, every week I run at least 4 sessions, each session is 5-8 km. Not fast running but running at a moderate pace to improve health. Running or physical exercise helps the body have better health and work better.

"Running is a full-body exercise, good for health. I myself have been running for about 5 years, every week I run at least 4 sessions, each session is 5 - 8 km. Not running fast but running at a moderate pace to improve health. Running or physical exercise helps the body have better health and work better," Dr. Quang added.
TWO MAJOR CAUSES ASSOCIATED WITH CANCER
How to proactively prevent cancer? Director of K Hospital replied: Regarding the risk of cancer, over 33% is due to tobacco. Quitting smoking reduces the risk of cancer. The second factor causing cancer is food and drink. Food itself does not cause cancer, but the way we process and preserve it inappropriately increases the risk, accounting for 33% of the causes of cancer.
"Those two factors account for nearly 70% of the risk. In addition, genetic factors and gene mutations account for about 5%. The remaining factors include other factors such as the environment," said Dr. Quang.
Faced with the reality that community groups on social networks share about eating foods that eliminate protein to "starve" cancer cells, the Director of K Hospital noted: Cancer patients need to have a reasonable, healthy diet, because food does not cause cancer, but the way we prepare and use it incorrectly can cause cancer.
According to Professor, Dr. Le Van Quang, during treatment, cancer patients also need to receive protein to improve their physical condition. If the patient does not eat enough protein, the cancer will consume all the muscle, causing the patient to become exhausted. Therefore, a proper diet contributes to preventing and repelling cancer.
C EARLY DIAGNOSIS
Professor Le Van Quang said that currently, advances in screening help detect cancer early, thereby making treatment more effective. In particular, colorectal cancer can be endoscopy or fecal occult blood test to find the risk group, then narrow band endoscopy to detect lesions. With lung cancer, screening can be done with low-dose CT to detect abnormal masses. Breast cancer can be detected early by mammography, or MRI for screening, but this method is more expensive so it is not widely applied.
"Some diseases can be detected by genetic mutation testing. If there is a genetic mutation, it needs to be closely monitored, and some preventive measures should even be taken to prevent cancer," said Dr. Quang.
The "Relay Journey" race to raise funds to support disadvantaged cancer patients was held on the morning of December 8 in Hanoi, with the participation of leaders of K Hospital, cancer patients and about 1,500 athletes.
Participating in the tournament, Ms. Vu Hoang Anh (56 years old, in Hanoi) shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. After surgery, she continued treatment according to the doctor's instructions and persistently trained in physical exercise. Ms. Anh said that her health is now much more stable, she takes medication and has regular monitoring at K Hospital. According to her, regular exercise, as simple as jogging every day, along with a reasonable diet, rest and adherence to the treatment regimen, has helped her a lot in the process of fighting the disease.
