According to researchers, “Doan” means beginning, “Ngo” is the period from 11am to 1pm, when the sun is closest to the earth. Doan Ngo means the beginning of the hottest days of the year.
To combat the heat and prevent disease, our ancestors had many unique experiences such as the custom of eating fruit, eating ash cakes, eating sticky rice wine, drinking realgar wine, and drinking Chinese skullcap to "kill insects" in the body early in the morning.
Every year, on the 5th of May, from the royal court to the countryside, people joyfully celebrate the Duanwu Festival. On this occasion, people of the ancient capital Thang Long bustle to buy colorful threads and scented bags on Hang Mun Street to put on their children; buy herbal leaves to make tea to drink, and buy medicinal herbs to prevent diseases.
In the royal court, the Duanwu Festival was solemnly celebrated by the dynasties with solemn rituals. This was also an occasion for the king and the royal family to prepare offerings to their ancestors and parents.
