Google Begins Testing AI-Only Search Results

(CLO) Google has become such an indispensable part of searching for information on the Internet that its name is used as a verb – "Google" means to look up.

But soon, Google may no longer simply display a list of links but instead provide answers directly from AI. The company has just announced an expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) search feature, powered by Gemini 2.0.

Soon, users will see more AI Overviews appear at the top of search results. But the bigger change is being tested: AI Mode. When enabled, Google will completely eliminate the traditional “10 blue links” list, and Gemini will take over the entire search process.

Google announced the first Gemini 2.0 models in December 2024, starting with Gemini 2.0 Flash, a lighter and faster version. More powerful variants of Gemini 2.0 are still being tested, but Google claims that AI Overviews can now better handle complex questions, including math, programming, and multimodal queries.

With this update, AI Overviews will appear on more results pages, and for the first time, Google accounts for minors will be able to see AI search results. Even users who aren’t signed in will soon see AI Overviews appear in their search results. This is just the beginning of Google’s long-term plan to integrate AI into search.

Gemini 2.0 is also the driving force behind AI Mode, a brand new search feature currently being tested in Google Search Labs. Instead of displaying traditional web links, AI Mode uses a custom large language model (LLM) to generate direct answers. These responses can include summaries of web content, data from the Google Knowledge Graph, and even shopping information. In other words, AI Mode is an upgraded version of AI Overviews.

According to Google, most searches today are no longer simple keyword strings but full-blown questions. With AI Mode, users can get direct answers instead of having to sift through a list of links. However, this depends on the accuracy and usefulness of AI – a challenge that even advanced AI systems like Gemini have not yet fully overcome.

Google insists that the company has no intention of abandoning web links entirely. “Helping users discover content on the web remains central to our approach,” Google said. In the examples Google shared, AI Mode still shows citations and source links, similar to AI Overviews.
