Election workers prepare to count ballots in Nuuk, Greenland on March 11, 2025.
When voting to elect 33 representatives to the island's parliament, about 40,000 voters here not only voted for members of the new parliament to decide on the new autonomous government, but also expressed their attitude towards world politics directly related to the island, namely US President Donald Trump's intention to buy the island for the United States. In a recent presentation before the two US legislative houses, Mr. Trump declared that the United States has a strategic security interest in this ice island and will eventually acquire the island "one way or another". Therefore, this year's parliamentary election on the island is essentially a referendum here on independence or dependence, on "whether Greenlanders are Greenlanders, or Danish citizens, or American citizens".
The small election therefore has a big impact because the election results will also be the answer of the islanders to Mr. Trump's ambition to expand the territory of the United States. In addition to the intention to buy Greenland, Mr. Trump also revealed his intention to regain control of the Panama Canal for the United States, turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States and directly control the Gaza Strip in the Middle East. The attitude of the people on Greenland will therefore have a significant impact on the future direction of the people in Panama, Canada and the Gaza Strip regarding Mr. Trump's above-mentioned intentions.
According to recent polls, the vast majority of Greenlanders want to remain autonomous and move towards independence, and do not want the island to become part of either Denmark or the United States. So it can be said that this mini-election has not yet taken place, but Mr. Trump has already received his answer.
