According to TechSpot , the technology world has just witnessed a spectacular step forward in the field of data storage. Two technology companies Micron and Astera Labs have successfully demonstrated the first PCIe 6.0 SSD, achieving sequential read speeds of up to 27 GB/s, promising to open a new era for storage performance.
Micron and Astera Unveil PCIe 6.0 SSDs with a Breakthrough in Speed
The demonstration at DesignCon 2025 marked a milestone, as the first complete PCIe 6.0-compatible system was introduced. Micron's "Data Center" SSD, combined with Astera's Scorpio P-Series Fabric switch (specialized in connecting devices in AI server systems, data centers, or high-performance computing systems), created an impressive performance, surpassing all expectations in terms of speed.

With sequential read speeds exceeding 27 GB/s, PCIe 6.0 SSDs deliver superior performance, double that of PCIe 5.0 generation. This is especially important in the context of artificial intelligence applications that increasingly require large bandwidth to process data.
Astera Labs claims the Scorpio P-Series Fabric Switch is the first switch specifically designed for PCIe 6.0 devices, allowing for optimal management of data flow between GPUs, CPUs, and SSDs.
This successful demonstration is proof that PCIe 6.0 is ready to be deployed in data centers, meeting the bandwidth-hungry needs of AI applications. However, mainstream users will still have to wait a while longer for motherboards supporting PCIe 6.0 to appear on the market.
PCIe 6.0 SSDs mark a major step forward in data storage technology, promising to deliver faster and more efficient user experiences, especially in the AI and data center space.
