At least 106 people were killed, 128 injured and dozens missing.
The landslides are the worst disaster in the state since 2018, when severe flooding killed nearly 400 people. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said more than 3,000 people have been evacuated and put in relief camps. Army soldiers, drones and sniffer dogs are being used to search for survivors.
Army engineers are building a replacement bridge after the one linking the area was destroyed. A military helicopter landed in the worst-hit area to evacuate the injured.
Chief Minister Vijayan said rainfall had far exceeded forecasts, rising from 204 mm to 572 mm in 48 hours. More rain is forecast over the next five days, and people have been advised to take precautions. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has called on the government to provide maximum support.
