Ericsson's report also shared that currently around 300 communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide have launched 5G services, of which around 50 CSPs have deployed 5G Standalone (5G SA). 5G continues to grow strongly in all regions and is expected to account for around 60% of all mobile subscriptions by the end of 2029. In the first three months of 2024, around 160 million new 5G subscriptions were added globally, bringing the total to over 1.7 billion. A total of nearly 600 million new subscriptions are expected in 2024.
5G network will continue to explode in the coming time
Mobile network data traffic increased by 25% year-on-year from end-March 2023 to end-March 2024, mainly due to user migration to newer network generations and data-intensive services such as video.
Mobile data traffic is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 20% through the end of 2029. Around a quarter of all mobile data traffic will come from 5G networks by the end of 2023, a figure that is forecast to increase to around 75% by the end of 2029.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Chief Networks Officer, Ericsson, said: “The Ericsson Mobility Report June 2024 shows that 5G subscriptions continue to grow strongly. Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access are the leading use cases, with signs that the potential of 5G is having a strong impact on service providers’ Fixed Wireless Access offerings. The report also highlights the need to accelerate the deployment of 5G Standalone technology to fully exploit the potential of 5G.”
In terms of user experience, statistics from a leading service provider show that 97% of user activities on mid-band 5G achieved content access times of less than 1.5 seconds, compared to 67% on low-band 5G and 38% on 4G (all bands).
In Southeast Asia and Oceania, 5G subscriptions are expected to reach around 560 million by the end of the forecast period. By the end of 2023, 5G subscriptions in Southeast Asia stood at 61 million. 5G subscriptions in the region continue to grow as subscribers migrate to 5G, driven by more affordable 5G devices, promotions, discounts, and large data plans from service providers. 5G subscriptions are estimated to have reached more than 20% of total subscriptions in markets such as Singapore, Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia. By the end of 2029, 5G mobile subscriptions are expected to reach 43% of total mobile subscriptions in the region.
5G is expected to become the dominant mobile access technology by subscriber base by the end of the forecast period. Despite the increasing population coverage of 5G, mid-band 5G has only been deployed in approximately 25% of locations globally outside of mainland China. Mid-band 5G spectrum offers a balance between coverage and capacity while improving user experience. As 5G technology matures, the focus of many service providers is expected to shift to developing differentiated connectivity services.
Ms. Rita Mokbel, Head of Ericsson Vietnam said: "Ericsson's investments in R&D (research and development) and its broad product portfolio - covering all areas of 5G network infrastructure as well as previous generations of network infrastructure - are invaluable in a market where technology is constantly evolving. Since 2015, our products have been 5G-ready, with more than 10 million 5G-ready access points shipped since then. We will leverage our regional and global deployment experience and strong technology to support a smooth, widespread 5G deployment in Vietnam."
Additionally, data traffic per smartphone user in Southeast Asia is expected to increase from 17 GB/month in 2023 to 42 GB/month in 2029.
