At many universities, it is not difficult to see students bringing into class everything from milk tea, coffee to bread, sticky rice, snacks, even lunch boxes... and then carelessly littering.

Many students give the excuse that their house is far from school and that they don't have time to eat breakfast because of early class time, so they have to bring food into class, and even conveniently throw trash in their desk drawers after eating.

Eating in class and littering

A medical student from the Faculty of Literature and Communication, University of Education, University of Danang, shared: "Every time I enter a classroom, I see water stains on the table from the previous student's glass of water, making it impossible for me to put my books down. I have to quickly find a tissue to wipe it off before I can go to class."

Y. also often saw plastic bags of trash left by previous students, and dirty papers scattered everywhere. The hot days made the space even more stuffy and uncomfortable.

Also at this school, student H. said that although he really likes snacks like mixed rice paper and stone-grilled sausage, he feels distracted when other students eat foods with strong smells during class.

She said she often snacks during breaks with friends, but absolutely avoids foods with strong odors for fear of affecting others.

Busy with deadlines, Ngoc Quang - a first-year student at the University of Technology - Danang University - would rather go hungry than bring food into class.

However, Quang still often sees other students eating during class. Walking around a few classrooms of this school, it is not difficult to see many students eating sandwiches in class.

A cleaning staff at the University of Education - Danang University complained: "Students litter after eating, spilling water on the floor, it takes a long time to clean. Especially at noon, many students stay in class to eat lunch and then litter right there, making the classroom smell. I have reminded them many times, but still receive indifferent attitudes from them."

Need to behave civilly

Many lecturers expressed concern about students' awareness in the university environment. An anonymous lecturer shared: "Seeing students bring food into the classroom always makes me uncomfortable, especially dishes with strong odors that affect everyone around.

Students are adults, in an intellectual environment, they need to behave civilly. The awareness of each student will contribute to creating a civilized classroom, a civilized community and a civilized generation.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , MSc. Nguyen Vinh San - Head of Administration Department, University of Education - Danang University - said that the school has issued regulations on school culture and classroom rules, including regulations that students are not allowed to bring food into the classroom and must throw trash in the right place. However, there are still students who do not comply, bring food into the classroom and then throw trash in the desk drawer.

"The school regularly propagates and reminds students during the annual civic week about complying with school culture regulations and using and preserving public property. In addition, the school arranges trash cans with lids in classrooms and hallways for students to dispose of trash in the right place, making it easier for sanitation workers to collect.

The desk drawers are also designed to be open, so trash or forgotten items can be easily found. The cleaning staff checks and cleans twice a day and reminds classes if students are found to be in violation," Mr. San informed.
