Ninh Son: Many new effective livestock models

Việt NamViệt Nam21/03/2025

In recent times, taking advantage of available advantages and potentials, many farmers in Ninh Son district have boldly converted to new crops and livestock suitable to the local climate and soil, bringing high economic efficiency, contributing to diversifying farming objects.

Visit the antler deer farm of Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung in Tan Hoa village, Hoa Son commune. This farm was built in 2022 with a closed scale of nearly 3 hectares. Mr. Trung shared that after carefully studying the antler deer farming model in many places, he decided to invest more than 500 million VND to build barns to raise 10 pairs of breeding deer imported from the northern provinces. Male deer will be cared for in individual barns to collect antlers for economic development, while female deer are free to breed and develop the herd. To save on livestock costs, he takes advantage of agricultural by-products and grows more grass to proactively source green food. Every day, Mr. Trung feeds the deer twice in the morning and afternoon, the main food is grass, corn kernels, peanuts and many other vegetables, tubers and fruits. Accordingly, the amount of food for deer each day is only 1/4 compared to raising cows. With the characteristics of being easy to raise and less susceptible to diseases, the deer herd develops very quickly.

According to Mr. Trung's experience: Ninh Thuan has a warm and sunny climate all year round, so deer raised in the North often produce antlers earlier than those raised in the North. Deer raised for about 2 years will start to produce antlers, however, because the deer is still young, the antlers are small. To have large and quality antlers, deer must be raised for 5-7 years to reach maturity. Within 45 days from the time the antlers bloom, they need to be harvested because if left longer, the antlers will age and lose value. In particular, during the antler growth stage, supplement food with high starch content so that the antlers reach high weight and can be sold at a good price.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Trung in Tan Hoa village, Hoa Son commune, (Ninh Son) takes care of the herd of velvet deer.

In addition to harvesting fresh antlers, breeders can also earn quite a high profit from raising female deer for breeding because they sell the breed and the meat. Breeding deer are sold in pairs for about 50 million VND/pair, while meat deer are purchased by the market at a stable price of 200,000 - 250,000 VND/kg. Up to now, Mr. Trung's deer farm has grown to more than 45 deer, of which 25 males are in the period of antler harvesting. Thanks to good care and development, every 8 months he will cut the antlers once (3 times in 2 years). Each pair of deer antlers after harvesting weighs from 0.8-1.2 kg, and is sold at an average price of 15 million VND/kg. On average, a deer raised for antlers brings in a revenue of 15 million VND/year.

Taking advantage of the medical value of deer antlers to increase the value of the product, he also processed health-supporting products. With 3 products processed from deer antlers that bring outstanding economic value such as: Deer antlers sliced and soaked in honey, dried antlers cut into powder and lotus seed antlers priced from 1.2-4.5 million VND/100 grams. Although raising deer antlers is a new model in the locality, the investment capital is quite high, but initially it brings much more economic efficiency than raising cows, goats, sheep... Besides, because it does not take much time to care for, food is easy to find, so breeders can still develop many economic models at the same time. This model is being piloted by Ninh Son district for 3 households in Ma Noi commune and 2 households in Quang Son commune from the mountainous ethnic program fund.

In Trieu Phong 1 village, Quang Son commune, Mr. Hoang Van Kinh is considered one of the pioneers in growing mulberry and raising silkworms in the area. Taking us to visit his family's mulberry and raising silkworm model, Mr. Kinh said that he had visited many places in Lam Dong province to see the mulberry and raising silkworm models. In 2023, realizing that growing sugarcane and cassava was not very effective, he started to switch to growing mulberry and raising silkworms.

To proactively provide food for silkworms, he has converted agricultural land to plant nearly 1 hectare of mulberry trees and invested nearly 400 million VND to set up a silkworm breeding trough, with an area of 200 square meters. According to Mr. Kinh, silkworms are very sensitive to the environment and temperature, so raising them on a large scale requires ensuring that the average temperature in the silkworm breeding "nests" is always maintained at 25-30 degrees Celsius, humidity is about 80-85% for silkworms to grow and develop well. Therefore, he invested in installing additional air conditioners to ensure the temperature. In particular, with the climate of "little rain, lots of sunshine", mulberry trees are suitable for Ninh Thuan soil to grow very well, mulberry leaves are not wet by rain or night dew. Green mulberry leaves help ensure nutrients so that silkworms spin silk, form quality cocoons and cocoons with a brighter white color.

According to Mr. Kinh, raising silkworms requires keeping track of the time to feed them. Because after each molt, the silkworms eat a lot of mulberry leaves, this is called the "silkworm feeding" stage, so the breeder must continuously supplement food. When the silkworms are "ripe", farmers will put the silkworms in "nests" (nests made of wooden frames about 1m2 in size, the inside of the wooden frame is divided into many small squares), when inside the wooden "nest", each silkworm will crawl into a square to make a nest, spin silk around itself, forming a silkworm cocoon. Mr. Kinh said: After only 3 months of planting mulberry trees, my family started raising silkworms. Every month, my family raises 2 batches of silkworms. Each batch raises 2 boxes of silkworm seeds, the cycle is about 21 days for 1 harvest. Each harvest is from 200-250kg of cocoons. With a stable selling price of 200,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, my family earns about 30 million VND per month. Raising silkworms has brought the family much higher income than growing sugarcane and cassava.

Comrade Duong Dang Minh, Secretary of the Quang Son Commune Party Committee, said: Currently, the area of mulberry cultivation for silkworm rearing in the commune has grown to over 4 hectares, with 6 silkworm rearing households. The locality also determined that the model of mulberry cultivation for silkworm rearing brings high economic value to farmers, so it is propagating and mobilizing households to boldly change the crop structure towards increasing economic efficiency on the same area unit. The locality's goal is to establish a mulberry cooperative for sustainable and stable development and to increase people's income.

The fact that many local farmers have boldly converted their mass farming models to new models that promote economic efficiency is the clearest evidence of the trend of shifting thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economics. Thereby, not only contributing to diversifying farming objects, improving quality but also promoting sustainable agricultural development in the locality.
